AFAG Backs ‘Democracy Under Attack’ Demonstration, Calls for Protection of Ghana’s Democratic Values
The Alliance for Accountable Governance (AFAG) has thrown its full support behind the “Democracy Under Attack” demonstration, describing the protest as a national call to defend Ghana’s democratic values, constitutional governance, and the independence of state institutions.
In a press statement issued on August 5, 2026, AFAG said the demonstration transcends partisan politics and represents a collective effort to protect the country’s democratic principles, including freedom, justice, accountability, and the rule of law.
According to the group, Ghana’s democracy belongs to every citizen and must be safeguarded through peaceful civic participation and responsible engagement. AFAG stressed that citizens have both the constitutional right and civic responsibility to demand accountability and ensure that public institutions operate with fairness, integrity, and independence.
AFAG outlines concerns
Explaining its decision to join the demonstration, AFAG cited a number of issues it believes have significant implications for Ghana’s democracy and constitutional freedoms.
Among the concerns raised are:
- The arrest and prosecution of citizens, including young people, journalists, and activists, over expressions of opinion.
- Concerns regarding equal justice and due process in cases such as Saglemi and Sedinam Tamakloe.
- Measures that the group says could affect judicial independence, civic freedoms, and the right to a fair trial, including restrictive bail conditions and the Tribunals Act.
- Growing concerns over the protection of freedom of expression and press freedom.
AFAG stated that these issues extend beyond individual cases and reflect broader questions about the type of democracy Ghana seeks to preserve—one where the Constitution is respected, institutions remain accountable, and citizens’ rights are fully protected.
Call for peaceful participation
The governance advocacy group appealed to all well-meaning Ghanaians to participate peacefully in the Democracy Under Attack demonstration, urging participants to conduct themselves with discipline and respect for the law.
AFAG emphasised that the strength of Ghana’s democracy depends not only on citizens’ willingness to speak out but also on their commitment to maintaining peace throughout the demonstration.
Concluding its statement, the organisation declared:
“Our Democracy is worth defending. Our Constitution is worth protecting. Ghana is worth standing up for.”
