Don’t Underestimate Us! — Obiri Boahen Warns NDC as NPP Adopts New Mindset

Former NPP Deputy General Secretary says ruling party could pay a heavy price if it takes the opposition’s strategy lightly

Former Deputy General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Nana Obiri Boahen, has issued a strong warning to the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC), cautioning the party against underestimating the NPP as it prepares for the next political battle.

According to Obiri Boahen, the NPP has adopted a new mindset that could make the party a formidable force despite its current position in opposition.

His comments come at a time when the NPP is reorganising its structures and preparing to elect new national officers, with 47 aspirants cleared to contest nine national positions.

“The NDC Should Not Underestimate the NPP”

Obiri Boahen’s central message is that the NDC should not become complacent simply because it currently controls government.

He believes the NPP’s approach and internal posture have changed, and that the governing party must take the opposition seriously rather than assume that its electoral advantage will automatically translate into continued dominance.

The former NPP executive’s warning is effectively a call for vigilance within the NDC, particularly as the NPP works to strengthen its internal structures and position itself for the political contests ahead.

NPP Begins Rebuilding Process

The warning comes against the backdrop of the NPP’s ongoing preparations for its 2026 National Officers Elections.

The party has cleared all 47 aspirants who went through vetting to contest positions including National Chairman, National Vice-Chairperson, General Secretary, National Organiser, National Youth Organiser and other national offices.

Balloting for the various positions is scheduled for Wednesday, September 9, 2026, at the NPP Headquarters at Asylum Down in Accra.

With the vetting process completed, attention has now shifted towards the next phase of the party’s internal reorganisation.

A Warning Ahead of the Next Political Battle

For Obiri Boahen, the current political situation should not lead the NDC into complacency.

His warning suggests that the NPP believes it still has significant political strength and intends to use its time in opposition to rebuild, reorganise and prepare for future electoral contests.

The message to the NDC is therefore straightforward: do not mistake the NPP’s current position for political weakness.

As both parties position themselves for the battles ahead, Obiri Boahen’s remarks are likely to add further intensity to Ghana’s already competitive political environment.

The NPP may be down—but according to Obiri Boahen, it should not be counted out.
