I Never Approved Any Arrest in My Name – Bawumia

Former Vice President and New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has called on the Ghana Police Service and the Attorney-General to immediately discontinue the prosecution of a National Democratic Congress (NDC) organiser in Agona West, insisting that he neither filed a complaint nor authorised any legal action against the individual.

In a press release issued on Wednesday, July 22, 2026, Dr. Bawumia said his office had been informed of the arrest and arraignment of the NDC organiser, who is facing charges for allegedly publishing false news and making offensive comments about him.

However, he made it clear that he had no involvement in the case.

“Dr. Bawumia wishes to state, clearly and unequivocally, that he has neither lodged any complaint nor sanctioned any prosecution against this young man or any other citizen. He does not desire, and will not endorse, the arrest or prosecution of any Ghanaian in his name for speech,” the statement said.

Dr. Bawumia noted that throughout his years in public life, he has endured insults, criticism and false allegations but has never relied on the powers of the state to respond to his critics.

According to him, offensive speech should be met with better speech, while falsehoods should be countered with the truth rather than arrests, court proceedings or harsh bail conditions imposed on ordinary citizens.

He therefore appealed directly to the Ghana Police Service and the Attorney-General to halt the ongoing prosecution, discontinue any similar actions purportedly taken on his behalf, and release the accused so he can return to his family and livelihood.

Dr. Bawumia also stressed that Ghana’s democracy is strengthened when citizens—including political opponents—are able to express themselves freely without fear of arrest or intimidation.

He concluded by stating that he has forgiven the young man, wished him well, and urged all political actors to focus their efforts on addressing the issues that matter most to Ghanaians rather than engaging in politically charged prosecutions.
