Jurassic Park Star Sam Neill Dies at 78 After More Than 50 Years in Film
New Zealand acting legend Sam Neill, best known for his iconic role as Dr. Alan Grant in the Jurassic Park franchise, has died at the age of 78.
Neill passed away on Monday, July 13, 2026, in Sydney, Australia. The announcement was made through his official Instagram account, which revealed that the actor was surrounded by his family in his final moments and “passed with the dignity that has characterised his whole life.”
His family described his death as “sudden and unexpected,” while confirming that Neill remained cancer-free at the time of his passing. The actor had previously revealed his battle with angioimmunoblastic T-cell lymphoma, a rare form of blood cancer, but announced earlier this year that he had overcome the illness.
Sam Neill’s acting career spanned more than five decades, during which he appeared in a wide range of films across different genres. Although he became a global household name for playing paleontologist Dr. Alan Grant in Steven Spielberg’s 1993 blockbuster Jurassic Park, he also earned recognition for his work in drama, thriller, science fiction and horror films.
Horror fans particularly admired Neill’s contributions to the genre, with his performances in films such as In the Mouth of Madness, Event Horizon, and Possession becoming memorable among fans.
Beyond film, Neill also gained a new generation of viewers through television roles, including his appearance in the acclaimed series Peaky Blinders.
At the time of his death, Neill still had upcoming projects awaiting release, including the next MonsterVerse film, Godzilla x Kong: Supernova, which is expected to arrive in cinemas in 2027.
Sam Neill leaves behind a remarkable legacy as one of New Zealand’s most respected actors, remembered for his versatility, dedication, and unforgettable performances on screen.
