The family, legal representatives and campaign team of New Patriotic Party (NPP) member Okatakyie Afrifa Mensah have issued a press statement detailing the circumstances surrounding his arrest by officers of the Ashanti North Regional Police Command on Sunday, July 12, 2026.

According to the statement, Mr Afrifa Mensah was arrested at about 7:30 a.m. while attempting to serve notice of a High Court injunction and a directive from the NPP National Steering Committee at the Afigya Sekyere East Constituency election centre.

The statement explained that on July 6, 2026, the NPP National Steering Committee ordered the immediate suspension of the Afigya Sekyere East Constituency Executive Committee elections pending the determination of an ongoing court case. It added that the directive followed an interim injunction issued by the High Court in Kumasi, restraining the party and its officers from proceeding with aspects of the electoral process.

Despite the court order and the party’s directive, the campaign team alleged that some constituency officials, led by Nana Nkansah Buadu, proceeded with preparations for the suspended elections.

According to the statement, Mr Afrifa Mensah, who has publicly declared his intention to contest the NPP parliamentary primaries, visited the venue to verify information and serve the court injunction on electoral officials.

The campaign team further alleged that upon his arrival, he and some of his supporters were physically assaulted by police officers at the venue before being arrested. It also claimed that neither his family nor his legal representatives were informed of his whereabouts for several hours after his arrest.

The statement dismissed reports linking Mr Afrifa Mensah to any vigilante group, insisting that he has never owned or operated such a group.

It further disclosed that by about 5:00 p.m. on Sunday, Mr Afrifa Mensah had been transferred to the Divisional Police Command at Asante Mampong, where he remains in police custody pending further legal processes.

The campaign team also alleged that Mr Afrifa Mensah and four members of his team sustained severe gunshot injuries and are currently receiving medical treatment.

Calling for calm, the Communications Directorate urged party supporters and the public to remain peaceful, respect the law and allow ongoing legal processes to take their course. The statement reaffirmed Mr Afrifa Mensah’s commitment to the NPP and expressed confidence that due process would ultimately vindicate his actions.
