Police Approve NPP August 6 Protest Over Sedina Tamakloe Acquittal

The NPP August 6 protest has received approval from the Ghana Police Service, clearing the way for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to embark on a planned demonstration on Thursday, August 6, following the acquittal of former Microfinance and Small Loans Centre (MASLOC) Chief Executive Officer, Sedina Tamakloe-Attionu.

The protest comes after the Court of Appeal overturned Sedina Tamakloe-Attionu’s conviction and 10-year prison sentence handed down by the High Court, acquitting and discharging the former MASLOC boss.

Speaking to journalists after securing approval from the Greater Accra Regional Police Command, the NPP’s National Organiser, Henry Nana Boakye, popularly known as Nana B, announced that demonstrators will assemble at 5:00 a.m. in front of the Supreme Court before marching to the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO), Jubilee House and Parliament.

According to Nana B, the NPP August 6 protest is aimed at highlighting what the party describes as selective justice, interference with the judiciary, restrictions on free speech and the gradual erosion of democratic governance in the country.

He stated that the party submitted its official notice for the demonstration on Friday, July 31, and accused the government of imposing what it considers repressive bail conditions on opposition members.

Nana B further argued that democracy is under threat, claiming that free expression is being criminalised and that the current political climate falls short of the democratic principles promised by President John Dramani Mahama.

As part of the demonstration, the NPP says it will present a formal petition to Parliament through a designated representative after passing through EOCO and Jubilee House.
