Police Arrest Six Suspects Over Deadly Attack at New Winneba

The Central Regional Police Command has arrested six suspects in connection with a violent attack and rioting at New Winneba in the Central Region that left three people dead and about 15 others injured.

The arrests were announced in a statement issued by the Public Affairs Unit of the Central Regional Police Command on Wednesday, September 2, 2026.

The six suspects are Kweku Kakraba, 52; Arko Thomas, 19; Samuel Tulasi, 19; Samuel Gyasi, 22; Emmanuel Okyere, 22; and Seth Osei, 22.

According to the Police, the suspects are being held in connection with the violent disturbances and attacks that occurred in New Winneba on Tuesday, September 1, 2026.

The Police said the incident occurred at about 10:40 a.m. on Tuesday, when an estimated 300 people, described as an irate mob, allegedly stormed New Winneba Township.

The group reportedly came from Gomoa Oguakrom, Gomoa Yenkuadze and Gomoa Pomadze.

According to the Police, the mob was armed with guns, stones, cutlasses and sticks and attacked residents while allegedly invading shops and residences belonging to natives of New Winneba.

The attacks resulted in significant disruption and damage to property within the township.

The violent confrontation left about 15 people injured, including one police officer.

The injured persons were rushed to the Trauma and Specialist Hospital in Winneba for medical treatment.

However, three of the victims were subsequently confirmed dead by the medical officer on duty.

The Police have since commenced investigations to establish the circumstances that led to the violence and identify all persons who may have participated in the attacks.

During investigations at the scene, the Police recovered one locally manufactured single-barrel gun and one empty AAA cartridge.

The weapon and ammunition have been taken into custody as exhibits as investigators work to determine their connection to the incident.

Following the violence, the Central Regional Police Command has deployed additional personnel to the affected area to restore and maintain peace.

Personnel from the Winneba Divisional Headquarters, Agona Swedru Division and Mankessim Division have been deployed to New Winneba.

An Inspector-General of Police special team has also been deployed to support the security operation.

Additionally, two armoured vehicles from the National Police Headquarters have been sent to the area to strengthen security and deter any further disturbances.

As part of measures to prevent a recurrence of the violence, the Police have mounted six snap checkpoints in the area.

The Command has also intensified day and night patrols to prevent further escalation and respond quickly to any emerging security threat.

Personnel from the Police Intelligence and Professional Standards (PID) and Criminal Investigations Department (CID) have also been deployed to monitor developments and support the ongoing investigations.

The Police said the area is currently calm and under control, following the deployment of additional security personnel and the implementation of the enhanced security measures.

The six arrested suspects remain in police custody and are assisting investigators with the ongoing inquiry.

The Central Regional Police Command is expected to continue investigations into the deadly attack, including the circumstances that led to the deaths, injuries, property damage and the alleged use of firearms and other weapons during the disturbance.

The Police have assured that security measures will remain in place to prevent further attacks and maintain peace in New Winneba and the surrounding communities.
