Police Confirm Okatakyie Afrifa Mensah Hospitalised Under Guard After NPP Election Disturbance
The Ashanti North Regional Police Command has confirmed that media personality Okatakyie Kwame Afrifa Mensah and another suspect are receiving medical treatment at the Mampong Government Hospital while under police guard following disturbances at the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Ejura Sekyedumase East Constituency executive elections.
In a statement released on Monday, July 13, the police said Afrifa Mensah, 43, and Osman Awuni, 44, complained of ill health after they were arrested on Sunday, July 12, and were subsequently admitted to the hospital.
“The two suspects remain under police guard while receiving treatment. Investigations are ongoing, and the public will be updated on any further developments,” the statement noted.
According to the police, Afrifa Mensah was among seven people arrested after a disruption at the SDA Church polling station in Wiamoase, where the constituency elections were taking place.
The Command alleged that at about 7:45 a.m., Afrifa Mensah arrived at the polling centre with a group of about 30 people. Police said the group became hostile when security officers questioned their presence, leading to an alleged attack on officers and the disruption of the voting process.
The police further stated that electoral materials were thrown onto the ground during the incident, while other members of the group fled the scene. Efforts are currently underway to apprehend the remaining suspects.
Preliminary investigations revealed that Afrifa Mensah claimed some of his supporters had been prevented from participating in the elections and that he had obtained an interlocutory injunction to stop the process.
However, the police stated that neither the Ghana Police Service nor the Electoral Commission had received any court order directing the suspension of the election.
The Command added that calm was restored after security intervention, allowing the voting exercise to continue under adequate protection. The election was completed peacefully at about 4:00 p.m., after which the Electoral Commission declared the results.
The Ashanti North Regional Police Command has assured the public that investigations into the incident are ongoing and further updates will be communicated.
