Police Secure Conviction of Woman Who Abducted Eight-Month-Old Baby in Volta Region

The Volta North Regional Police Command has secured the conviction and sentencing of a 31-year-old woman, Stella Amedzorme, for abducting an eight-month-old baby at the Kpando Market in the Volta Region.

According to a press release issued by the Public Affairs Unit of the Ghana Police Service’s Volta North Regional Police Headquarters in Hohoe on Wednesday, August 5, 2026, Amedzorme was sentenced to three years’ imprisonment after pleading guilty to the offence.

Police said the incident was reported on July 17, 2026, when the baby’s mother, Gloria Xagbe, 21, informed officers that she had briefly left her eight-month-old son in the care of the convict, who was a fellow market trader, while she went to buy packaging bags.

However, upon her return, both Stella Amedzorme and the baby had disappeared.

Acting on intelligence, police arrested Amedzorme on July 18, 2026, at Toviata, a suburb of Kwakemor in the Oti Region, and successfully rescued the child.

Investigations revealed that the convict admitted taking the baby on the instructions of her fiancé, who is currently on the run.

The suspect was first arraigned before the Kpando Circuit Court on July 20, 2026, where she was remanded into police custody. She reappeared before the court on August 3, 2026, pleaded guilty to the charge, and was sentenced to three years in prison.

The police confirmed that the rescued eight-month-old child was found unharmed. They added that efforts are ongoing to arrest the convict’s fiancé to assist with investigations.

The Volta North Regional Police Command assured the public of its continued commitment to protecting lives, particularly children, and urged parents and guardians to exercise caution when leaving their children in the care of others.
