Seven Illegal Miners Dead After Mining Pit Collapses at Manso Kaneago

The incident occurred at about 10:00 p.m. on Thursday when a mining pit reportedly collapsed while miners were working underground in search of gold deposits.

According to officials, approximately 12 miners were operating at the site when the pit caved in. While four miners managed to escape, the remaining eight were trapped underground.

Rescue and recovery efforts have since been underway, with officials from the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), the District Security Council (DISEC) and the Ghana Police Service working to retrieve the trapped miners.

As of the latest update, seven bodies had been recovered, while one miner remained trapped underground. The rescue teams were expected to return to the site to continue efforts to locate and recover the remaining victim.

The exact cause of the collapse has not yet been established. Authorities are investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident, including the conditions under which the miners were operating at the site.

The Municipal Chief Executive for Amansie South, Benjamin Marfo, said he was leading a team to the mining site to gather more information and assess the situation.

He explained that efforts were ongoing to establish the full circumstances surrounding the collapse and the entrapment of the miners.

The bodies recovered from the collapsed pit have been deposited at a morgue, pending further procedures.

The incident has once again raised concerns about the dangers associated with illegal and unregulated mining activities, particularly the risk of pit collapses and loss of life.
