President John Dramani Mahama has announced a massive expansion of Ghana’s road infrastructure, revealing that about 2,000 kilometers of roads are currently under rehabilitation as part of the government’s development agenda.

Delivering the 2026 State of the Nation Address (SONA) in Parliament, President Mahama said the investment represents the largest road infrastructure intervention in Ghana’s history, aimed at improving economic productivity, connectivity, and access to essential services.

“As I speak, WEC has started work on 50 major road projects covering 1,144 kilometers. The total estimated cost of these projects is GH¢50 billion,” President Mahama told Parliament.

He further disclosed that the government is also completing 23 road projects inherited from the previous administration but left unpaid. According to him, completing these projects ensures that public funds already committed are not wasted.

“We are determined to ensure continuity in development. These 23 projects were awarded by the previous administration, and we are completing them to protect national resources and deliver value to the people,” he said.

The inherited projects cover an additional 573 kilometers and are estimated to cost GH¢15 billion. When combined with ongoing new projects, the total road rehabilitation and construction works amount to nearly 2,000 kilometers nationwide.

“If you add these projects together, it means about 2,000 kilometers of roads are currently under rehabilitation as we speak. This is the biggest single investment in the history of Ghana’s road sector,” the President emphasized.

President Mahama explained that improving road infrastructure is central to his government’s economic transformation agenda, noting that good roads facilitate trade, agriculture, tourism, and access to health and education services.

He assured Ghanaians of the government’s commitment to transparency, accountability, and efficient project execution to ensure that infrastructure investments deliver maximum value for taxpayers.

The SONA also highlighted ongoing reforms across other sectors, including health, education, and economic modernization initiatives aimed at driving sustainable development across the country.
