UGMC Rejects Michael Blackson Allegations Over Late Mother’s Treatment

The University of Ghana Medical Centre (UGMC) has rejected allegations made by Ghanaian-American comedian Michael Blackson concerning the treatment his 83-year-old mother received before her death, insisting that several claims contained in his public statements are inaccurate.

The controversy began after Blackson took to social media platform X, where he described UGMC as “the worst hospital in Ghana.” He accused the hospital of repeatedly misdiagnosing his mother, prioritising financial gain over patient care and treating his family without compassion during her final days.

According to Blackson, his family spent approximately GH₵250,000 on medical bills over a one-month period before doctors informed them that his mother had died from an infection on July 16, 2026.

He further alleged that a hospital staff member showed little sympathy when he went to identify his mother’s body and claimed another employee requested a tip. Blackson also stated that his sister was involved in a physical confrontation with a male nurse, who later reported the matter to the police.

In a statement responding to the allegations, UGMC rejected Michael Blackson’s allegations, saying it had conducted an internal review and found that parts of his account were inaccurate.

The medical centre said the concerns were examined “thoroughly, fairly and objectively” through its established clinical and administrative procedures. However, it stressed that it could not disclose details of the patient’s diagnosis, treatment or medical records because it is legally and ethically bound to protect patient confidentiality, even after death.

UGMC stated that all medical decisions regarding Blackson’s mother were made by qualified healthcare professionals based on professional medical judgement, accepted standards of care and the patient’s best interests.

The hospital also dismissed claims that financial considerations influenced treatment decisions, explaining that its billing processes are governed by institutional policies and operate independently of clinical decision-making.

Addressing the reported confrontation involving Blackson’s sister and a hospital employee, UGMC confirmed that the matter had been referred to the appropriate law enforcement authorities and said it would not comment further while the issue remains under investigation.

The medical centre added that it remains open to engaging privately with Blackson and his family to address their concerns. It also assured the public that any specific allegation of staff misconduct would be fully investigated and referred to the relevant authorities where necessary.

The latest response follows an earlier statement in which UGMC expressed regret that Blackson was dissatisfied with his family’s experience and indicated its willingness to engage with him directly.

Meanwhile, Blackson has expressed doubts about pursuing legal action in Ghana, saying he believes the judicial process could take a long time.

The dispute between the comedian and UGMC has sparked renewed public debate about patient care, accountability within Ghana’s healthcare system and the need for accessible mechanisms for patients and families to seek answers when concerns arise.
