Young Man Allegedly Shot Dead by NAIMOS Personnel at Akyem Hemang

A young man identified as Douglas Acheampong has allegedly been shot and killed by personnel of the National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) at Akyem Hemang in the Fanteakwa South District of the Eastern Region.

The incident reportedly occurred around 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, August 26, 2026, in the centre of the community.

According to information gathered from residents, the incident began when the NAIMOS team, comprising military personnel, was returning from an operation and allegedly spotted Kwaku Kwebia, an immigration officer dressed in civilian clothes, speaking on the phone.

The officers, who were reportedly travelling in four V8 Land Cruisers and a pickup truck, allegedly accused Kwebia of acting as an informant and demanded that he hand over his mobile phone.

Kwebia is said to have denied the allegation, explaining that he was speaking to his brother. However, he reportedly refused to surrender his phone.

The situation allegedly escalated when the officers attempted to force him into one of their vehicles.

His sister and other residents reportedly intervened, with the sister allegedly blocking the entrance to the vehicle to prevent her brother from being taken away.

Acheampong, who had also joined the residents trying to stop the officers from taking Kwebia away, reportedly became involved in a confrontation with the personnel.

The officers subsequently allegedly fired several warning shots in an attempt to disperse the gathering residents.

According to community sources, Acheampong was running away from the scene with other residents when he was allegedly shot from behind at close range.

The bullet reportedly entered through his back and exited through his stomach, leaving him critically injured.

Residents reportedly rushed Acheampong to a hospital after the NAIMOS personnel had left the area. However, medical staff pronounced him dead on arrival.

The incident has reportedly left residents of Akyem Hemang angry, with community members said to be planning demonstrations to demand justice for Acheampong and accountability over his death.
