Ghana today marks 14 years since the passing of former President John Evans Atta Mills, whose death on July 24, 2012, remains one of the most significant moments in the country’s democratic history.

President Mills died after being rushed to the 37 Military Hospital in Accra while serving as Ghana’s third President under the Fourth Republic. His passing came just three days after celebrating his 68th birthday and only months before the completion of his first term in office.

Although the official cause of his death was never publicly disclosed, it was widely known that he had been battling an illness and had travelled to the United States for medical treatment shortly before his passing.

His sudden death sent shockwaves across Ghana, Africa, and the international community, with world leaders, diplomats, religious bodies, and ordinary citizens paying tribute to a leader widely admired for his humility, honesty, and commitment to public service.

A respected law professor, and former President Mills earned the nickname “Asomdwehene” (King of Peace) for his calm leadership style, promotion of national unity, and commitment to peaceful democratic governance. Throughout his presidency, he consistently preached peace, tolerance, and reconciliation, particularly during periods of political tension.

His administration was credited with strengthening democratic institutions, maintaining Ghana’s reputation as one of Africa’s most stable democracies, and overseeing the commencement of commercial oil production in 2010, a milestone that positioned Ghana as an oil-producing nation. He also championed investments in education, healthcare, infrastructure, agriculture, and social intervention programmes aimed at improving the lives of ordinary Ghanaians.

President Mills was widely praised for his integrity and modest lifestyle. He was often described as a leader who placed national interest above partisan politics and remained committed to constitutional rule, accountability, and respect for the rule of law.

Following the announcement of his death, then Vice President John Dramani Mahama was sworn in as President later that same day in accordance with Ghana’s Constitution, ensuring a peaceful and seamless transfer of power that further strengthened the country’s democratic credentials.

Fourteen years after his passing, President John Evans Atta Mills continues to be remembered as a statesman whose legacy of peace, humility, honesty, and selfless service continues to inspire many Ghanaians. His leadership remains a symbol of civility in politics and a reminder that public office is a platform to serve with dignity, compassion, and integrity.
