AMA Announces August National Sanitation Day Clean-Up Exercise With Strict Enforcement

According to a press release issued by the Assembly, the exercise will begin at 6:00 a.m. and end at 12:00 noon, with all shops, stalls, tabletop businesses, hawking activities, and trading operations expected to remain closed during the exercise period.

The AMA said the clean-up exercise will focus on desilting drains, clearing choked gutters and waterways, sweeping public spaces, and removing refuse as part of efforts to improve sanitation and protect public health.

The exercise will cover all sub-metropolitan areas, electoral areas, markets, lorry parks, communities, business districts, and other public spaces within the Accra metropolis.

The Assembly has urged traders, shop owners, transport operators, residents, corporate institutions, and other stakeholders to actively participate by cleaning their surroundings, clearing frontage areas, removing waste, and supporting efforts to keep Accra clean.

The AMA further warned that strict enforcement measures will be applied, adding that persons who fail to participate, obstruct the exercise, or engage in trading activities during the clean-up period will face arrest, fines, prosecution before the sanitation court, or other sanctions in accordance with the law.

The Assembly encouraged all residents and businesses to cooperate fully by keeping their shops closed and joining the sanitation exercise to promote a cleaner, healthier, and safer Accra.
