Bank of Ghana Mourns Passing of Dagbon King Ndan Yaa-Naa Abukari II

The Bank of Ghana mourns the passing of Ndan Yaa-Naa Abukari II, the Overlord of Dagbon, and has extended its condolences to the people of the Dagbon Kingdom and the bereaved Royal Family.

In a statement issued by its Communications Department on July 27, 2026, the Bank of Ghana expressed deep sadness over the death of His Royal Majesty, describing him as a respected custodian of culture, peace, and unity.

Bank of Ghana stated that the late Dagbon King’s leadership and wisdom contributed greatly to peace, stability, and development in Ghana.

“His Majesty was a revered custodian of culture, peace and unity, and his leadership and wisdom contributed immensely to the stability and development of Ghana,” the statement noted.

The central bank added that his wise counsel and guidance would be greatly missed by many across the country.

On behalf of the Board of Directors, Management, and Staff of the Bank of Ghana, the institution extended heartfelt condolences to the elders of Dagbon, the people of the Dagbon Kingdom, and the Royal Family.

The Bank also prayed for strength and comfort for the people of Dagbon during this period of mourning.

“We pray that the Almighty grant the people of the Dagbon Kingdom strength and fortitude during this difficult period. May his soul rest in perfect peace,” the statement concluded.

The death of Ndan Yaa-Naa Abukari II has led to an outpouring of tributes from traditional authorities, government institutions, and individuals who have honoured his contribution to preserving Dagbon culture and promoting peace.

Background 

The passing of Ndan Yaa-Naa Abukari II was officially announced on July 13, 2026, by the Head of the Dagbon Kingmakers, Kuga Naa Adam Abdulai II, after the completion of customary rites at the Gbewaa Palace in Yendi.

According to Dagbon tradition, the announcement followed the sounding of the traditional talking drum and the performance of sacred customary rituals, which marked the transition of the Overlord of Dagbon.
