The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has increased its annual financial support to each of its 54 member associations to US$700,000, according to remarks by CAF President Dr Patrice Motsepe at the organisation’s strategy conference in Cape Verde.

Motsepe highlighted the increase during the CAF Strategy Conference held from October 7 to 9, 2026, as the continental football governing body continues to pursue stronger national football administrations and sustainable development across Africa.

The annual allocation has risen from US$200,000 to US$700,000 per association, representing an additional US$500,000 for each national football governing body. This is a 250% increase over the previous amount, rather than a 33% increase, according to reports of the announcement.

The funding boost is intended to strengthen the capacity of national associations to manage their operations and support the continued growth of football in their respective countries. Potential areas of impact include grassroots development, youth football, domestic competitions and administrative improvements, although the results will depend on how each association uses the funds.

CAF has also expressed its ambition to raise the annual support to US$1 million per member association through sponsorships and commercial partnerships.

The increase forms part of the organisation’s broader efforts to make African football more competitive internationally and financially sustainable. At the strategy conference, CAF leaders discussed the development of the 54 member associations and the continued improvement of continental competitions.

The higher allocation could provide national federations with greater financial flexibility. However, transparent spending, effective administration and measurable development outcomes will be important in ensuring that the additional resources translate into tangible benefits for players, clubs and supporters.

For Ghana and other African football nations, the funding increase could create additional opportunities to strengthen football structures, provided the resources are directed towards clearly defined priorities and managed effectively.
