Firefighters Injured as GNFS Engine Crashes En Route to Buipe Fuel Tank Fire
Five personnel of the Ghana National Fire Service sustained injuries in a road accident in the early hours of Sunday while responding to a reported surface fuel tank fire at Buipe in the Savannah Region.
The Savannah Regional Public Relations Officer of the GNFS, DOII Salisu Mohammed Sirilbaini, said the Buipe Fire Command received a distress call in the morning, leading to the immediate deployment of a fire crew to the area.
According to him, the fire engine was involved in an accident before reaching the scene when it veered off the road and overturned.
The injured firefighters were rushed to the Buipe Government Hospital for medical attention. DOII Sirilbaini disclosed that two of the personnel have been treated and discharged, while three others remain in critical condition and are under close medical supervision.
He added that the Chief Fire Officer has assured the injured firefighters of the Service’s full support and access to the best possible medical care.
In response to the incident, the Savannah Regional Commander, DO2 Abubakar Alhassan, deployed additional firefighters from Damango to support operations in Buipe. Although plans were initially made to transfer the injured personnel to the Tamale Teaching Hospital, medical officers at the Buipe Government Hospital confirmed they have adequate facilities to manage the cases.
DOII Sirilbaini emphasized that no lives were lost in the accident, despite all five firefighters sustaining injuries.
