Germany Probes Alleged Sexual Harassment Involving Remotely Controlled Robot
BY ANGEL NO LIE | KPDONLINE | WORLD NEWS | October 14, 2026
German police have launched an investigation after a robot allegedly touched a 16-year-old girl inappropriately outside a fast-food restaurant in Cologne, raising questions about the responsibility of people who operate robotic devices in public spaces.
Authorities confiscated the robot and two mobile phones belonging to the two individuals suspected of being involved in the incident. Investigators are working to establish how the robot was operated and whether its movements were deliberately controlled.
Incident Reported in Cologne
According to police, the incident occurred late on Saturday night, October 10, or into the early hours of Sunday, October 11, 2026, near a fast-food restaurant in the western German city of Cologne.
The robot, described as approximately 1.2 metres tall, allegedly approached the girl from behind, touched her buttocks and made thrusting movements. The teenager reportedly screamed and moved away.
Police said the robot’s suspected owner, a 16-year-old boy, and his 19-year-old companion were believed to have filmed the incident and streamed it on social media while commenting on what was happening.
Robot and Mobile Phones Confiscated
Emergency services responded to the scene, and officers located the two suspects nearby. The robot was subsequently found in the trunk of a vehicle and seized, alongside the suspects’ mobile phones.
Investigators are examining whether the robot’s actions resulted from preprogrammed movements or were deliberately directed by someone controlling it remotely.
Police have not announced charges against the two suspects. Their possible roles in the incident remain under investigation.
Police Warn Against Harmful Social Media Reactions
Following the incident, Cologne police also warned against inappropriate online comments about the case. Authorities cautioned that mocking the alleged victim or circulating harmful commentary could further affect her wellbeing and, in some circumstances, potentially cross legal boundaries.
The warning highlights the importance of treating allegations of sexual harassment seriously, including when a robotic device is involved.
Questions About Human Control of Robots
The case has drawn attention to the challenges law enforcement may face when robotic devices are used to carry out actions that could constitute harassment or other offences.
A central question for investigators is whether the robot was acting according to programmed instructions or responding to real-time commands from its operators. Establishing that distinction may help determine individual responsibility under applicable German law.
The investigation remains ongoing, and the allegations have not yet been tested in court.
