Ghana has been chosen as the host country for the 70th Session of the United Nations (UN) Tourism Commission for Africa (CAF) in 2027, in a development expected to strengthen the country’s standing as a leading tourism and cultural destination on the continent.

The decision follows a successful bid presented by Ghana during the current session of the Commission. The event is expected to attract tourism ministers, government officials, policymakers, investors, industry stakeholders and development partners from across Africa to discuss the future of sustainable tourism and regional collaboration.

The Minister for Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, Ablah Dzifa Gomashie, announced the achievement on her official Facebook page after Ghana was confirmed as the host nation.

In her presentation to member states, the Minister thanked the Secretary-General of UN Tourism and the Government of Seychelles, the host of the current session, for giving Ghana the opportunity to present its proposal.

She said the bid reflected Ghana’s vision of positioning tourism as a major contributor to economic transformation, cultural diplomacy, regional integration and sustainable development throughout Africa.

According to the Minister, the 2027 gathering will hold added significance because it will coincide with Ghana’s 70th Independence Anniversary. She described the occasion as a unique opportunity to celebrate the country’s journey since independence while hosting the 70th session of the Commission for Africa.

As part of Ghana’s presentation, the Minister highlighted the country’s rich cultural heritage, historic landmarks, vibrant creative arts industry, peaceful democratic environment and internationally recognised hospitality as key factors that make it an ideal host for the continental event.

Hosting the Commission is expected to provide Ghana with an opportunity to showcase its tourism potential, attract investment into the sector and deepen partnerships with other African countries. The meeting will also serve as a platform for member states to exchange ideas and develop strategies aimed at promoting sustainable tourism and strengthening the industry’s contribution to economic growth across the continent.

The successful bid is seen as another milestone in Ghana’s efforts to position itself as the gateway to African tourism, culture and heritage while reinforcing its growing influence in international tourism affairs.
