GPRTU Orders Drivers to Reverse Unapproved Transport Fare Increases

The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) has instructed commercial drivers who have increased transport fares without approval to immediately return to the previous charges.

The directive comes after the union received complaints from passengers in parts of Accra that some drivers had begun charging higher fares despite the absence of an officially approved increase in public transport fares.

The GPRTU has cautioned drivers against unilaterally adjusting fares, insisting that any change must go through the established consultation process involving the relevant stakeholders.

Speaking to Citi News, GPRTU Deputy Public Relations Officer (PRO), Samuel Amoah, confirmed that the union had received reports of drivers charging passengers more than the approved fares.

He explained that the proposed fare increase remains on hold and that passengers are expected to continue paying the existing fares until a formal decision is reached.

According to him, the union agreed with the Transport Ministry to suspend the planned increase after the government removed the GH¢2 levy from the price of diesel.

He said the GPRTU will monitor fuel prices until the end of the month before reconsidering the issue of transport fares.

“We understand things are difficult, but there is a process we go through before we increase transport fares,” Mr Amoah said, while urging drivers who had increased their charges to revert to the previous fares.
