The Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) has announced a fire outbreak at its Mallam Substation in Accra following a fault on one of the transformers in the early hours of Wednesday, October 14, 2026.

The incident, which occurred at approximately 2:36 a.m., disrupted electricity supply to parts of Accra served by the substation, according to a press statement issued by the company’s Corporate Communications Section.

In the statement dated Wednesday, October 14, GRIDCo informed the public that the fault resulted in a fire outbreak on one of the transformers at the facility, affecting power supply to some customers in the areas connected to the substation.

The company said the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) responded to the incident and successfully contained and extinguished the fire.

Following the intervention of the fire service, GRIDCo said electricity supply had been restored to parts of the affected areas, while efforts were continuing to reconnect the remaining locations as quickly as possible.

The company indicated that its engineers were investigating the cause of the fire to determine the circumstances that led to the transformer fault.

It further disclosed that it had begun replacing the affected transformer, aiming to complete the replacement as soon as possible.

GRIDCo did not provide a specific timeline for fully restoring electricity to all affected areas in the statement. However, it assured the public that work was ongoing to restore supply to the remaining locations without unnecessary delay.

The company expressed regret over the disruption caused by the incident and apologised to all affected customers and stakeholders for the inconvenience.

“GRIDCo sincerely apologises for the inconvenience caused, and thanks all affected customers and stakeholders for their patience and understanding,” the statement said.

The statement was issued by the Corporate Communications Section of the Ghana Grid Company Limited, which operates Ghana’s electricity transmission network.

GRIDCo’s announcement comes as restoration efforts continue following the early-morning fire at the Mallam Substation. The company said investigations into the cause of the incident and arrangements to replace the damaged transformer were underway.
