“I Expected McBrown to Defend Me” — MzGee
Media personality MzGee has expressed disappointment in Nana Ama McBrown for not defending her when netizens accused her of taking over her show.
Background
Born Gloria Akpene, MzGee is a renowned radio and television presenter who rose to prominence at Multimedia Group Limited before joining Media General. At Media General, she became one of the leading faces of the company’s English entertainment brands and hosted several entertainment programmes.
She later left Media General to join 3Music Networks as co-host of its morning show before moving to Despite Media, where she replaced Nana Ama McBrown as host of United Showbiz on UTV Ghana.
During her tenure as host of United Showbiz, MzGee faced intense criticism from some social media users, many of whom claimed she had taken over McBrown’s show. Others argued that she could not fill McBrown’s shoes, while some criticized her command of the Twi language, noting that she is Ewe and was hosting a show largely centred on Twi-speaking audiences.
The presenter later travelled to the United States to host programmes and cover the Ghana Music Awards USA for the station. She eventually gave birth there before returning to Ghana. However, the show that attracted the most criticism during her time is now hosted by Gospel musician Empress Gifty Adorye.
Speaking about the backlash, MzGee said she felt hurt that McBrown did not publicly defend her. According to her, before accepting the role as host of United Showbiz, she personally reached out to McBrown to seek her blessings, which she received. She therefore expected McBrown to make that known publicly and clarify to critics that she was not responsible for her exit from the show.
“When people were insulting and spitting on me, I expected Nana Ama McBrown to speak up for me. You know, I get very emotional talking about it,” she said.
She further explained:
“People believed I was the reason she was ousted, but I want to put this on record today: when I was asked to host United Showbiz, the first thing I did was send her a DM. I told her, ‘Big sis, I’ve been told you’re no longer hosting the show. Please give me your blessings before I take your place.’ So, when people were insulting me, I expected Nana Ama McBrown to speak for me. Yes, I truly expected that,” she emphasized.
She also spoke about how painful the experience was, especially after seeking her approval beforehand.
“It hurt deeply. If I hadn’t sought her permission, it wouldn’t have affected me this much. I gave her that level of reverence, so it would have been nice for her to say, ‘This girl is not the problem. If I have an issue, it’s with management.’ I was not her problem. But I was left out there for people to rubbish me, claiming I was the reason she was sacked. Romeo, I learned a lot of lessons from hosting United Showbiz,” she told Nana Romeo Welewele on Okay FM’s Drive time show.
