The management of Korle Bu Teaching Hospital (KBTH) has appealed to Ghanaian musician Mzbel to provide details regarding claims she made in a viral social media video alleging that a relative died after being denied admission due to the unavailability of a hospital bed.

In a statement issued by the hospital, management said it is treating the allegation with the seriousness it deserves and has already made several attempts to reach Mzbel and her family to verify the circumstances surrounding the incident. However, the hospital noted that it has not yet been able to establish direct contact with them.

According to KBTH, the ongoing inquiry seeks to determine whether the deceased was officially referred to the hospital, whether the patient arrived at the facility and was refused admission because of a lack of beds, or whether the patient had not yet been transferred and was instead advised to wait until a bed became available.

The hospital has therefore urged Mzbel to cooperate by providing the necessary information to support a comprehensive and transparent investigation.

Management further stressed that under a directive issued by President John Dramani Mahama during the 2026 State of the Nation Address, no public health facility is permitted to reject emergency patients. The directive, the hospital said, has also been reinforced by the Minister for Health.

KBTH disclosed that it has expanded its bed capacity and continues to remind all emergency and clinical units of their responsibility to provide urgent medical care. It added that any staff member found to have deliberately refused treatment to an emergency patient would face a full investigation, as such conduct constitutes a serious breach of hospital policy.

The hospital also encouraged patients and their families to report grievances through its official complaints channels, including its telephone exchange, dedicated complaints line (0244 406 700), online complaints portal, and QR codes displayed across the hospital premises.

According to management, complaints submitted through these official platforms are investigated promptly to ensure accountability, protect complainants, and improve the quality of healthcare delivery.

Korle Bu Teaching Hospital concluded by expressing its condolences to the bereaved family and reaffirmed its commitment to establishing the facts surrounding the matter in a fair, transparent and professional manner.
