Okyeame Kwame Calls for Free University Education for Farmers’ Children

Ghanaian musician Okyeame Kwame has proposed that children of farmers be granted free university education as a way of encouraging more young people to pursue agriculture and boost the country’s food production.

The musician believes farmers deserve greater support because of their significant contribution to Ghana’s economy and their role in providing food and sustaining livelihoods.

Speaking in an interview on Hitz FM, Okyeame Kwame argued that extending free education to children from farming households at the tertiary level would serve as an additional incentive for families engaged in agriculture.

He explained that the policy should cover the educational expenses students would otherwise be required to pay, easing the financial burden on farming families and giving their children greater access to higher education.

According to him, one of the major challenges facing the agricultural sector is the difficulty of encouraging farmers to motivate their children to follow in their footsteps. He attributed this partly to the limited incentives and support available to people working in the sector.

Okyeame Kwame also pointed to Ghana’s continued dependence on imported food products, including onions, as an indication of the need to strengthen local agricultural production and make farming more attractive to the younger generation.

He believes that providing free university education for farmers’ children could help them acquire advanced knowledge, technical expertise and modern agricultural skills that could be applied to improve farming methods and increase productivity.

The musician stressed that agriculture remains fundamental to national development, noting that food production supports other sectors of the economy and plays a vital role in everyday life.

He added that if he were in a position to introduce such a policy, he would prioritise free university education for children of farmers, describing it as an investment that could benefit farming families and the country as a whole.
