Cristiano Ronaldo has confirmed that he has no immediate plans to retire from international football despite the controversy surrounding his recent departure from Portugal’s training camp.

“Cristiano Ronaldo Remains Committed to Portugal Despite Recent Fallout”

The 41-year-old Portugal captain says he accepts responsibility for leaving the squad and believes the Portuguese Football Federation should punish him for his actions. However, he remains available for selection once any disciplinary sanction has been completed.

Ronaldo accepts responsibility

Ronaldo left Portugal’s Nations League camp after being an unused substitute during the team’s 2-1 victory over Norway. He subsequently learned that he would not start against Denmark and decided to leave the squad.

In a lengthy statement, Ronaldo apologized to his teammates and Portuguese supporters while insisting that his actions should have consequences.

He said the Portuguese Football Federation should assess the incident and impose punishment without reducing the sanction, acknowledging that his position as captain made his conduct more serious.

Dispute with Jorge Jesus

Ronaldo also provided his version of the disagreement with Portugal coach Jorge Jesus.

According to the forward, Jesus had agreed to manage his playing time as part of a fitness plan. Ronaldo said he was subsequently told he would play for about 30 minutes against Norway and warmed up from halftime, but was never introduced.

The forward described the episode as a breach of trust. He also claimed that a subsequent agreement over how the situation would be explained publicly was not followed. Jesus has disputed Ronaldo’s account of their discussions.

International career continues

Despite the fallout, Ronaldo made it clear that he does not consider the episode the end of his Portugal career.

He said that, provided he remains physically fit and continues performing for his club, he intends to make himself available for Portugal after serving any suspension.

The decision means Ronaldo is not following the path of international retirement that many had expected after Portugal’s 2026 World Cup campaign. Earlier this year, he had suggested that the tournament could mark the end of his World Cup career.

Ronaldo remains Portugal’s record appearance holder and leading scorer, with 234 international appearances and 146 goals according to current player statistics.

Portugal moves forward

The controversy comes as Portugal continues its Nations League campaign. The team has won its recent matches without Ronaldo, while Jesus has indicated that the door remains open for the veteran forward’s return.

The next stage will depend on the Portuguese federation’s disciplinary decision and whether Ronaldo and Jesus can repair their relationship. For now, however, Ronaldo’s message is clear: he accepts punishment, but he is not ready to say goodbye to Portugal.
