Sammy Awuku Defends NLA Record, says Sponsorships were for Revenue Growth

Samuel Awuku has mounted a strong defence of his tenure at the National Lottery Authority (NLA), arguing that corporate sponsorships criticised as wasteful were strategic investments that catalysed a massive revenue boom for its charitable arm.

The former Director-General provided precise financial figures to back his claim. He revealed that the NLA Caritas Lottery Platform, relaunched in October 2021 after a four-year hiatus, saw astronomical growth: from GHS 102,585.23 in 2021 to GHS 6,251,500.50 in 2024. Cumulatively, the platform generated approximately GHS 11,048,022.48 during his tenure.

Awuku explained that this growth was not accidental. “Upon assuming office, the Caritas Lottery Platform had next to nothing in its kitty,” he said. The sponsorships of events like the Ghana Club 100 Awards were essential marketing tools to regain market dominance and attract “corporate Ghana,” the Platform’s primary stakeholders.

He framed these expenditures as calculated business investments. The revenue generated, he stressed, directly funded the Good Causes Foundation’s projects. “These sponsorships… grew the Caritas Lottery Platform from GHS 100,000 in 2021 to over GHS 11,000,000 by the end of 2024,” Awuku stated, presenting the sponsorships as the engine of the Foundation’s philanthropic work.
