The Tema Supreme Leo Club, in collaboration with Lions District 418, Ghana, partner Leo Clubs and other organisations, has provided relief support to families affected by the June 2026 floods in Angala, a community in Tema Community 5.

The relief exercise was held on Saturday, August 15, 2026, at the New Church School in Angala as part of efforts to assist families who lost personal belongings and property after floodwaters entered the community following the overflow of a nearby lagoon.

The initiative received support from the Lions International District 418, Ghana Disaster Relief Committee, with assistance from the Lions Clubs International Foundation (LCIF).

As part of the intervention, essential relief items were distributed to families affected by the floods. The exercise also included community education sessions on drug abuse, mental health and general wellbeing.

The project followed an earlier assessment of the community conducted by members of the Tema Supreme Leo Club, Accra Excel Leo Club, Koforidua Utech Leo Club and Tema Oak Leo Club. During the assessment, the clubs identified several challenges facing residents beyond the immediate impact of the floods.

President of the Tema Supreme Leo Club, Leo Grace Okoto, said residents, particularly young people, were confronted with issues including substance abuse and teenage pregnancy.

She explained that these concerns informed the decision to incorporate education and awareness into the relief exercise, allowing the initiative to address both the immediate effects of the disaster and some of the social challenges affecting the community.

The educational sessions sought to raise awareness about drug abuse, mental health and general wellbeing while encouraging residents, especially young people, to make healthier and more responsible choices.

The initiative brought together a wide range of service organisations and Leo Clubs, including Tema Supreme Leo Club, Tema Supreme Lions Club, Accra Platinum Leo Club, Accra Ultimate Leo Club, Accra Ubuntu Leo Club, Accra Excel Leo Club, Tema Oak Leo Club, Accra Sankofa Leo Club, Accra City Leo Club, Koforidua Utech Leo Club, Rotaract Club of Tema, We Communicate Impact and Edward Vision Foundation.

The collaboration demonstrates the commitment of the Lions and Leo Clubs to supporting communities affected by disasters while also identifying and responding to emerging social and community needs through service, education and advocacy.

The June 29, 2026 floods affected several communities in parts of Accra and Tema, with Angala among the areas that experienced significant disruption after floodwaters entered homes and affected residents’ properties.

For affected families in Angala, the relief intervention provided immediate assistance while also creating an opportunity for community members to discuss challenges that continue to affect their daily lives.

The Tema Supreme Leo Club said the initiative forms part of its broader commitment to serving vulnerable communities, supporting people affected by disasters and contributing to sustainable community development.

The project was undertaken under the Lions International thematic service area with the support of Lions District 418, Ghana, and the Lions Clubs International Foundation.
