GH¢50 Million Bail? NPP Demands Answers Over Dennis Aboagye’s EOCO Arrest
The former Western North Regional Minister, Joojo Rocky Obeng, has questioned the circumstances surrounding the arrest and bail conditions of New Patriotic Party (NPP) member Dennis Aboagye, describing the GH¢50 million bail requirement as excessive.
Speaking on the matter with Maurice Otoo of Kpd online at the premise of the Economic and Organized Crime Office (EOCO), Mr. Obeng argued that law-abiding citizens who cooperate with state investigative bodies should be treated fairly under the law, including being considered for self-recognizance bail where appropriate.
According to him, Dennis Aboagye had consistently responded to invitations from the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) and had been cooperative throughout the investigation on his alleged charges.
“If someone is a law-abiding citizen and is involved in an offence, the law can grant him self-cognisance bail,” he stated, questioning why Aboagye was arrested at the airport despite his cooperation with investigators.
Mr. Obeng also expressed concern over the bail terms imposed on the former government official, asking why a GH¢50 million bail bond with three sureties was deemed necessary.
“We are all worried as NPP members and his loved ones,” he said, adding that efforts were underway to help satisfy the bail conditions and secure Aboagye’s release.
Dennis Aboagye was arrested by EOCO on Sunday, July 12, 2026 at the Accra International Airport upon his arrival from overseas.
According to sources, Aboagye was given a stop order from EOCO to bar him from travelling overseas due to investigation surrounding him on the alleged Ghc 55 million financial loss to the state but he refuted.
On Monday, July 13, the anti-graft agency granted him a bail set at GH¢50 million with three sureties.
As of Tuesday, July 14, 2026, his legal team had reportedly been unable to meet the bail conditions, leaving him in EOCO custody pending the fulfillment of the bail terms.
The case has sparked debate within political circles, with some NPP members questioning whether the bail conditions are proportionate and calling for greater transparency in the handling of the matter.
