The Ghana Police Service has deployed thousands of officers nationwide to take part in the National General Cleaning Exercise, which commenced on Friday, July 10.

In a statement, the Police Administration announced that personnel and sanitation equipment had been mobilised to support the two-day exercise aimed at improving environmental cleanliness and reducing the risk of flooding across the country.

The Service said officers have been equipped with brooms, wheelbarrows, tricycles and other cleaning tools to assist with sanitation activities in communities nationwide.

The Police also encouraged members of the public to actively participate alongside officers in maintaining clean and safe surroundings.

“Join our officers in communities across the country as we work together to keep Ghana clean and safe,” the statement urged.

The nationwide clean-up initiative was introduced following the devastating floods of June 29, which severely affected several parts of the country, particularly the Greater Accra Region.

The disaster claimed at least 13 lives, displaced thousands of people, destroyed homes and businesses, damaged public infrastructure, and highlighted persistent challenges such as poor drainage systems, indiscriminate waste disposal, and inadequate environmental sanitation.

As part of measures to address the aftermath of the floods, President John Dramani Mahama directed all government appointees—including Ministers, Members of Parliament, Chief Executive Officers of state institutions, Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives, as well as heads of public institutions—to leave their offices and lead clean-up activities within their respective communities.

The two-day nationwide exercise is one of several interventions introduced by the government’s Post-Flood Mitigation Committee to improve sanitation, clear choked drains, and help prevent future flooding incidents.
