Vice President Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang Calls for Collective Action on Sanitation
Vice President Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang has called on Ghanaians to take shared responsibility for maintaining a clean environment, stressing that poor sanitation affects everyone regardless of who caused the problem.
She made the remarks on Friday, July 10, while participating in the National Two-Day Clean-Up Exercise at the Nungua lorry terminal in Accra.
Addressing residents, sanitation workers and other participants, the Vice President said environmental cleanliness is a shared responsibility and should not be left solely to the government.
According to her, the careless disposal of waste by individuals often creates serious challenges for entire communities, including flooding and unhealthy living conditions.
“Even the person who suffers may not necessarily have been the one who caused the damage,” she said.
Prof. Opoku-Agyemang also highlighted the increasing problem of choked drains, noting that indiscriminate dumping of refuse into gutters contributes significantly to flooding.
“When we throw garbage into our drains, we block the natural flow of water, and that is one of the reasons our gutters overflow during heavy rains,” she stated.
She urged the public to adopt responsible waste disposal practices and work together to keep communities clean and safe.
