The Government of Ghana has announced a shift from peacekeeping to peace enforcement in Bawku and surrounding areas following a worrying surge in violent clashes tied to the long-standing chieftaincy conflict.

In a press release issued by the Presidency Communications Office, government officials stated that the recent escalation in violence threatens to derail ongoing peacebuilding efforts, prompting the deployment of the Ghana Armed Forces to enforce law and order. The military presence will be backed by intensified curfews to ensure public safety.

The statement, signed by Felix Kwakye Ofosu, MP, Spokesperson to the President and Minister for Government Communications, emphasized that all necessary measures are being taken to protect lives and property.

“The Ghana Armed Forces will take all necessary steps to ensure the safety of all residents,” the statement read, calling on residents to fully cooperate with the security forces.

The government commended His Majesty Otumfuo Osei Tutu II for mediating the conflict and acknowledged the crucial roles played by the Nayiri and Zugraana in supporting the peace process. According to the release, the peace process had been nearing resolution until recent killings necessitated urgent intervention to safeguard the greater good.

Citizens in affected areas are being strongly advised to avoid acts of violence and support the peace initiatives. The government has expressed deep regret for any inconveniences caused by the military enforcement efforts but reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to restoring peace and ensuring the safety of all, especially students and vulnerable residents.

This latest action highlights the government’s firm stance on security and peace in Bawku, with the aim of ensuring lasting stability for all affected communities.
