The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Dr. Christian Tetteh Yohuno, has announced the arrest of eight individuals linked to violent incidents that marred the Ablekuma North constituency rerun elections.

The July 11 polls, held across 19 polling stations, were disrupted by assaults on three journalists and several political figures. The incidents, captured in videos widely shared online, sparked public outrage and condemnation from civil society and the media.

Addressing the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) in Accra on Wednesday, August 20, the IGP disclosed that the Accra Regional Police Command had taken the suspects into custody. He confirmed that the accused are being processed and will be arraigned before court within days.

“The Accra Regional Commander, as of yesterday, said he had eight suspects. Eight suspects have been arrested. They are being processed, and from the advice I had from the Regional Commander, tomorrow or Friday, they will be put before the court,” Dr. Yohuno stated.

He further assured that the Police Service remains committed to pursuing justice, adding that any officer found to have acted unprofessionally during the disturbances will also face sanctions.

“We are making progress, and we will make sure that justice is done to those who, in one way or the other, failed to act professionally,” he said.

The IGP reiterated the police administration’s zero tolerance for misconduct, stressing that the credibility of elections and public trust rests on the integrity and professionalism of security personnel.
