Inspector General of Police (IGP) Christian Tetteh Yohuno has praised the peaceful and orderly conduct of the Akwatia by-election, describing it as a benchmark for future elections in Ghana.

Speaking during a visit to the constituency on Tuesday, September 2, to observe security operations, Mr. Yohuno commended both security personnel and voters for ensuring a calm electoral process.

“Everything is going on smoothly as planned, and that is what we expect — to ensure at the end of the day we have a very smooth and peaceful election,” he said.

The IGP highlighted the dedication of the police, noting that all regional commanders and members of the Police Management Board (POMAB) were deployed to work directly with officers at polling stations.

“I am very satisfied with the performance of my men. This election is such that we have all regional commanders and all POMAB members on the field, working with the personnel. Everything is going on very well,” he added.

He further assured the public that the police remain committed to preventing electoral violence, stressing that past incidents, such as those recorded at Ablekuma North, would not be repeated.

“Ablekuma North violence is a thing of the past. We are moving forward. This will be an election that sets the tone for future elections,” Mr. Yohuno emphasized.

The Akwatia by-election, triggered by the death of the constituency’s sitting Member of Parliament, covered 119 polling stations with more than 50,000 registered voters. The process has so far remained peaceful, with only minor incidents reported earlier in the day.
