The Minister for the Interior, Mubarak Mohammed Muntaka, has confirmed that 13,253 Ghanaians have crossed into neighbouring Côte d’Ivoire following violent land clashes at Gbiniyiri in the Savannah Region.

Speaking in an interview with Joy FM on Thursday, September 4, 2025, Mr. Muntaka said the figure had been jointly verified by both Ghanaian and Ivorian authorities.

The clashes, which erupted on Sunday, August 24, have claimed 31 lives and displaced thousands in about 12 communities within the Sawla-Tuna-Kalba District.

Earlier estimates from the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) suggested that more than 48,000 people—mostly women and children—had been affected, with nearly 14,000 seeking refuge in Burkina Faso and Côte d’Ivoire.

Mr. Muntaka assured that government, together with traditional leaders and the National Peace Council, is working to restore calm. A delegation from Gonjaland, alongside the peace council, has already engaged the Yagbonwura, and a committee is expected to be set up soon to investigate the conflict and recommend preventive measures.

He expressed concern that displaced families had abandoned their farms and livestock, warning that the situation could trigger food insecurity if not resolved quickly.

On security, the Minister revealed that over 700 military and police personnel have been deployed to the area to maintain law and order. He noted that relative calm had returned, with no recent casualties reported.
