Pokuase–Nsawam Road Repairs Back on Track After GH¢809m Payout
The Ministry of Roads and Highways has assured motorists that the ongoing rehabilitation of the Pokuase–Nsawam road will be completed on schedule, following the return of contractors to site.
Work on the critical highway had stalled for several months due to delayed payments. However, the Controller and Accountant General, Kwasi Agyei, confirmed that GH¢809 million was released to the contractor on August 4, 2025, paving the way for construction to resume.
The development brings relief to commuters who have endured heavy traffic congestion during the hiatus. It also comes just days before the Ghana Private Road Transport Union’s (GPRTU) one-week ultimatum was set to expire. The union had threatened to suspend operations if the government failed to ensure the contractor’s return.
Appearing before the Public Accounts Committee of Parliament on Wednesday, August 20, Deputy Roads Minister Alhassan Suhuyini apologised to road users for the long delay, attributing it to challenges the ministry inherited.
“I will first of all apologise to all motorists on that stretch. By the time we assumed office, the contractor, like many others across the country, had already abandoned the site due to non-payment. We have since worked with the Finance Minister to release funds, and I am glad to report that the contractor has now mobilised fully back to site. This is not going to be a nine-day wonder,” Mr. Suhuyini assured.
