Tensions Rise as Police Barricade EOCO Ahead of NPP Protest Over Detained Former NAFCO CEO
Security has been tightened at the headquarters of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) in Accra, as police mount barricades in anticipation of a protest by members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the Minority caucus. The demonstration is in response to the continued detention of former National Food Buffer Stock Company (NAFCO) CEO, Abdul-Wahab Hannan.
Hannan was arrested alongside his wife on June 25 for alleged financial misconduct. Although his wife was granted bail set at GH¢30 million, Hannan remains in custody despite reportedly meeting his GH¢60 million bail conditions.
On Thursday, July 3, some NPP supporters gathered at the EOCO premises to call for his release. The protest is expected to escalate on Monday, July 7, as more party members — including MPs and executives — plan a larger demonstration at the same location.
NPP National Youth Organizer, Salam Mustapha, confirmed the planned protest during an interview with Channel One TV’s Charles Owusu Kumi. He explained that although Hannan’s legal team had initially advised against public demonstrations, frustration among supporters has made such action unavoidable.
As a precaution, police began strengthening security measures early Monday morning, erecting barricades to control crowds and prevent access to EOCO’s premises.
According to reports by Citi News’ Charles Owusu Kumi, Hannan’s family is also present at the EOCO compound, awaiting developments.
The NPP insists that Hannan’s ongoing detention, despite meeting bail conditions, is unjust and is demanding an official explanation from the authorities.
