University of Ghana suspends senior lecturer for sexual harassment

The University of Ghana has suspended Dr. Sampson Obed Appiah, a senior lecturer in the Sociology Department, for two semesters after he was found guilty of sexual harassment.

In an official notice signed by the University’s Registrar, Mrs. Emelia Agyei-Mensah, and dated March 12, 2025, Dr. Appiah was found to have violated Section 1.1(A) of the Sexual Harassment and Misconduct Policy and Section 10.0 of the Code of Conduct for Academic Staff.

Disciplinary Measures

As part of the sanctions, Dr. Appiah must: Issue a formal written apology to the complainant.

Serve a two-semester suspension from all university duties. Undergo mandatory training on sexual harassment and misconduct, facilitated by the Anti-Sexual Harassment Committee. Be barred from applying for promotion for one year after his suspension.

The University of Ghana reaffirmed its commitment to upholding ethical standards and ensuring a safe and respectful academic environment for students and staff.

This decision highlights the institution’s zero-tolerance policy on harassment, reinforcing the importance of accountability and professionalism within the university community.
