Vice President Naana Jane Opoku – Agyeman Donates Four Months’ Salary to Ghana Medical Trust Fund
Vice President Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang has donated four months’ salary to support the newly established Ghana Medical Trust Fund, also known as the Mahama Cares Fund.
President John Dramani Mahama made this announcement on Wednesday, May 7, during his update on the first 120 days of his second term in office. He reiterated his government’s commitment to impactful social policies, including Free Tertiary Education for Persons with Disabilities and the Mahama Cares Fund.
According to the President, the Mahama Cares Fund is a significant national initiative designed to offer financial assistance to Ghanaians battling chronic illnesses that are not fully covered by the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS). He described the fund as a “lifeline” for patients needing long-term care.
President Mahama highlighted that he had earlier contributed six months of his own salary when he launched the fund on April 29 at the University of Ghana Medical Centre. He added, “Vice President Naana Jane also pledged four months of her salary to the Mahama Cares Fund.”
To build further momentum, the President has instructed all government appointees to donate at least one month’s salary to the fund. He also called on all Ghanaians to contribute what they can using the short code *255# available on all mobile networks.
He assured the public that disbursements to support underprivileged patients would begin once the fund’s governing board is constituted. Additionally, the Ghana Medical Trust Fund Bill is ready and will soon be presented to Cabinet for approval before being submitted to Parliament.
“We are united in this mission to touch lives and bring health, healing, hope, and joy,” President Mahama affirmed.
