Bawumia predicts NPP comeback in 2028

Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, former Vice-President and the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) 2024 presidential nominee, says he is “very confident” the party will regain power in the 2028 general elections.

Speaking to members of the NPP’s UK branch in London, Dr Bawumia pointed to a long-standing trend in Ghanaian politics: opposition parties tend to win when the governing party fields a first-time presidential candidate after a two-term president.

“Ghana’s history shows it is hard for a first-time candidate to win immediately after a two-term president,” he said. “The NDC will have to present a brand-new candidate in 2028; that, in itself, gives us a natural advantage—provided we do our homework.”

He argued that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government will struggle to deliver on the “many promises” it made ahead of the 2024 polls, citing rising prices despite pledges to lower the cost of living.

Dr Bawumia also apologised for the NPP’s heavy defeat in 2024:

“We worked hard but clearly got some things wrong. I apologise on my own behalf and on behalf of the party for the outcome.”

A 12-member committee chaired by former Speaker of Parliament Prof. Mike Oquaye has completed an internal review of the loss, but party leaders say the report is for internal use only.

Despite the setback, Dr Bawumia stressed that the NPP has “learnt the necessary lessons” and, “by God’s grace,” will be better prepared to win in 2028.
