A 47-year-old man has been banned from attending any football stadium in the United Kingdom following his arrest for allegedly racially abusing Bournemouth forward Antoine Semenyo during Liverpool’s Premier League opener at Anfield.

The incident occurred in the 29th minute of Friday’s match, August 15, 2025, when Semenyo drew the referee’s attention to the abuse. Play was briefly halted before resuming.

Merseyside Police confirmed on Saturday that the Liverpool-based man, who has not been named, was arrested on suspicion of a racially aggravated public order offence. He has been released on conditional bail, which includes a ban on attending any regulated football match in the UK and a restriction from coming within one mile of any designated stadium.

Police added that the investigation is ongoing and that they are working closely with Liverpool Football Club.

Semenyo, the 25-year-old Ghana international, addressed the incident on social media, saying the night “will stay with me forever, not because of one person’s words, but because of how the entire football family stood together.” He thanked teammates, Liverpool players, fans, and Premier League officials for their support, calling it a reminder of why he loves the sport.

Despite the incident, Semenyo scored twice in the second half as Bournemouth fought back from two goals down before ultimately losing 4-2 to Liverpool.

The Premier League confirmed that its on-field anti-discrimination protocol was applied and that the incident “will now be fully investigated.”

The case comes shortly after Tottenham Hotspur’s Mathys Tel faced online racial abuse following a missed penalty in the UEFA Super Cup against Paris Saint-Germain.

Merseyside Police stated on Monday, August 18, 2025, that the investigation into the Semenyo incident is ongoin
