NPP Rejects EC’s Plan for Expanded Re-run in Ablekuma North, Threatens Legal Action

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has strongly opposed the Electoral Commission’s (EC) decision to conduct re-run elections in 19 polling stations within the Ablekuma North constituency.

At a press conference held on Wednesday, July 3, NPP General Secretary Justin Frimpong Kodua dismissed the EC’s assertion that the party had agreed to the expanded re-run during a meeting on July 1. He labeled the claim as false and cautioned that the party would take legal action if the EC fails to reverse the decision.

Mr. Kodua expressed shock over what he described as an “abrupt shift” by the EC, noting that the commission had earlier informed both Parliament and the party that only three polling station results were pending in Ablekuma North.

“This sudden expansion to 19 polling stations raises serious questions about the transparency and consistency of the Commission’s operations,” he said, urging the EC to clarify the basis for the expanded re-run.

The dispute centers on unresolved issues from the recent general elections, with the Ablekuma North constituency emerging as a flashpoint. The NPP’s strong rejection of the EC’s position highlights deepening tensions between political parties and the electoral body, particularly around the credibility and finality of election outcomes.

The EC has yet to issue an official response to the NPP’s statement. Meanwhile, concerns about electoral transparency and institutional trust continue to dominate Ghana’s political discourse.
