SSNIT Unveils Big Plans to Transform Labadi, La Palm Beachfront into Tourism Hub

Published

on

The Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) has announced plans to transform the beachfront adjoining the Labadi Beach Hotel and La Palm Royal Beach into a major tourism and hospitality destination.

The redevelopment follows the clearance of unauthorised structures from the beachfront, a move SSNIT says forms part of a broader effort to protect, properly plan and redevelop the area.

According to the Trust, the long-term vision is to position the beachfront as one of Ghana’s major tourism destinations and potentially a tourism hub in West Africa.

Rather than viewing the exercise solely as the removal of businesses and livelihoods, SSNIT says the redevelopment is intended to create a better-organised environment capable of generating broader and more sustainable economic opportunities.

‘We are creating opportunities, not taking livelihoods away’

SSNIT says it is aware that several individuals have operated businesses and built livelihoods around the beachfront over the years.

The Trust, however, argues that the redevelopment will ultimately open up new opportunities for residents and businesses within a properly managed tourism enclave.

Young people from Labadi and surrounding communities are expected to be considered for employment opportunities that will emerge during the construction phase and subsequent operations, subject to the applicable recruitment requirements.

The redevelopment is expected to generate opportunities across several sectors, including construction, hospitality, tourism, food services, entertainment, security, cleaning, maintenance and transportation, among other related activities.

Labadi beachfront redevelopment tied to SSNIT investments

SSNIT has also stressed that the properties and assets being protected and redeveloped form part of its investment portfolio.

The Trust says these assets ultimately belong to workers and pensioners whose contributions form the foundation of the Social Security Scheme.

It is therefore the responsibility of SSNIT to protect, manage and develop its assets in a manner that can generate sustainable returns for its members.

The Labadi-La Palm redevelopment, according to the Trust, is therefore expected to serve a dual purpose — strengthening Ghana’s tourism economy while enhancing the value of an important SSNIT investment asset.

SSNIT promises continued engagement with Labadi community

SSNIT has also acknowledged the importance of involving the Labadi community in the redevelopment process.

The Trust says it will continue engaging chiefs, traditional authorities, community leaders and residents throughout the various stages of the project.

The engagements are expected to provide platforms for SSNIT to explain the redevelopment plans, listen to concerns, identify opportunities for local participation and ensure that residents understand how they can benefit from the project.

Beach to remain open to the public

Despite the planned transformation, SSNIT says the beachfront will remain a public beach.

The redevelopment is expected to commence this month, with a major focus on restoring the area into a cleaner, safer and better-managed environment.

SSNIT says environmental management, sanitation, security, accessibility and the overall visitor experience will be key considerations in the redevelopment.

The objective is to create an attractive tourism enclave capable of drawing visitors while preserving the beachfront as a place accessible to the public.

Big tourism ambitions for Labadi

SSNIT’s broader ambition is to transform the beachfront into an asset that delivers value to multiple stakeholders — from tourists and the Labadi community to Ghana’s wider tourism industry and, importantly, workers and pensioners whose contributions underpin the Scheme.

The redevelopment, if successfully executed, is expected to reshape the beachfront landscape while creating new opportunities in tourism, hospitality, employment and related economic activities.

For SSNIT, the message is clear: the redevelopment is not simply about clearing the beachfront, but about turning the area into a better-planned tourism destination capable of generating long-term economic value for Ghana.

NMAG condemns reported assault on new media practitioner during La Beach demolition

Published

on

The New Media Association of Ghana (NMAG) has condemned the reported assault of a new media practitioner during a demolition exercise at La Pleasure Beach in Accra.

The incident occurred on Friday, October 2, 2026, when members of the new media community and other journalists were at the location to cover and document the demolition exercise.

According to NMAG, military personnel physically confronted and struck one of its members, Kwaku Dennis Sika, popularly known as Sika Official, while directing media practitioners to move away from the area.

The Association said footage from the scene circulating publicly appears to show the incident and has raised concerns about the manner in which some media practitioners were treated during the operation.

NMAG said it has urged Sika Official to visit the nearest health centre to receive medical attention for any injuries he may have sustained during the reported incident.

While acknowledging the role of security personnel in maintaining order, protecting lives and property, and enforcing security measures during sensitive operations, NMAG said physical force against a media practitioner carrying out legitimate professional duties was unacceptable.

The Association also acknowledged that there may be circumstances where access to particular areas must be restricted for safety or operational reasons.

However, it stressed that such restrictions must be communicated and enforced professionally.

“Bloggers, online journalists and content creators should not be subjected to physical assault simply because they are documenting an event of public interest,” NMAG said.

The Association called on the Ghana Armed Forces, particularly personnel deployed for operations of this nature, to exercise professionalism, restraint and respect when engaging with members of the New Media Association of Ghana and the media at large.

NMAG further said that whenever media practitioners are required to move away from a restricted area, clear instructions should be issued and appropriate security procedures followed.

It stressed that physical violence should not be used as a means of controlling or managing media coverage.

The Association has also called on the appropriate authorities within the Ghana Armed Forces to conduct a thorough review of the circumstances surrounding the incident and take appropriate action if any personnel are found to have acted outside established professional standards.

NMAG further urged security agencies responsible for future operations to establish clear arrangements for media access and communication.

According to the Association, such arrangements would allow security personnel to perform their duties effectively while enabling media practitioners to carry out their responsibilities safely.

NMAG noted that the growth of Ghana’s digital media industry means bloggers, online journalists and content creators are increasingly covering major national events, public exercises and issues of significant public interest.

It said these practitioners have therefore become an important part of Ghana’s contemporary media landscape.

The Association said it would continue to advocate for the safety, dignity and professional recognition of its members while encouraging them to conduct themselves responsibly and comply with legitimate security instructions when covering sensitive operations.

NMAG maintained that the work of security agencies and the media can coexist, provided there is clear communication, professionalism, mutual respect and adherence to established procedures.

The Association also said it remains open to constructive engagement with the Ghana Armed Forces, Ghana Police Service, Ghana Journalists Association and other relevant stakeholders to develop practical measures that will promote safer and more professional interactions between security personnel and new media practitioners.

The statement was signed by NMAG President Eugene Osafo-Nkansah and dated October 2, 2026.

Management apologises to students over registration delays, announces plans for academic registration and randomised hostel allocation

The management of the University of Ghana has issued an important notice to Level 100 and continuing students concerning registration for the 2026/2027 academic year, following challenges affecting the online registration process.

According to the university, the ongoing difficulties with online registration for the First Semester are linked to the ongoing industrial action by University Administrators.

Management has apologised to students and assured them that arrangements are underway to make the registration portal available.

Registration portal to be made available

The university says students should remain patient as steps are being taken to restore access to the portal and allow eligible students to complete their academic registration.

The notice, signed by Professor Gordon A. Awandare, Pro Vice-Chancellor, Academic and Student Affairs, also addresses accommodation arrangements for the new academic year.

University announces randomised bed allocation

In another key development, the University of Ghana says arrangements are being made to enable eligible students to secure campus accommodation through a Randomised Bed Allocation Exercise.

Students who wish to be considered for university accommodation will have to complete three key requirements:

Express interest in university accommodation using the link sent to them by the university.
Pay at least 50% of their total fees due for the academic year.
Complete their academic registration once the registration portal is opened.

The university says the date and other details for the Randomised Bed Allocation Exercise will be announced later through its official communication channels.

Students warned about accommodation scammers

The University of Ghana has also issued a strong warning to students and parents to be cautious of individuals claiming to be university officials and offering accommodation in exchange for money.

Management stressed that university accommodation can only be secured through the official online allocation process.

The university further reminded students that all fees must be paid into designated university bank accounts.

It warned that the university does not collect fees through personal bank accounts or mobile money accounts.

Students and parents have therefore been urged to be vigilant and avoid dealing with individuals who demand payments through unofficial channels.

Management appeals for patience

The university says it appreciates the patience and understanding of students and parents as it works towards opening the portals for both academic and residential registration.

For now, students are expected to monitor the university’s official communication channels for further announcements regarding the registration portal and the Randomised Bed Allocation Exercise.

National Security Demolishes Labadi Beachfront Structures at Hotel’s Request

Published

on

Friday’s action along a section of the beach front was not a Flood Mitigation Action by the government task force.

The action has nothing to do with the work of the Taskforce along the Kpeshie lagoon, East Legon Boundary Road, Oyarifa, behind Mayfair Estates, etc, that are efforts towards supporting the Ministry of Works, Housing and Water Resources to mitigate any future floods.

To understand Friday’s action, it was carried out under the supervision of the National Security at the request of the Labadi Beach Hotel.

These are structures, some permanently built (Polo Beach Club and others) on the beach in front of the hotel, and which according to the business, is adversely affecting the safety, tranquillity and reputation of the Hotel, diminishing the visitor experience and undermining the orderly management of one of Ghana’s most important tourism destinations.

While the hotel will be able to explain, in more detail, the necessity for its action to reclaim its beach front, we must all be concerned about the serious sanitation issues that these unauthorised and unregulated commercial operations cause, in addition to the security risks.

I have seen drone shots and other short videos. Is the Labadi Beach Hotel not right in reclaiming its beach front (I am not talking about the La Pleasure Beach, please).
