The Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service has arrested 26 suspects linked to cybercrime, human trafficking and related offences in a major intelligence-led operation, while rescuing 33 victims across different parts of the country.

According to the Director-General of the CID, COP Lydia Yaako Donkor, the coordinated operation was carried out on July 3, 2026, following intelligence gathered by the police.

Speaking to the media, she disclosed that officers arrested 10 suspects at Mataheko-Afienya, where nine victims were rescued. Another 11 suspects were picked up at Fafa, leading to the rescue of six victims.
The operation continued at Kwabenya, where police arrested five suspects and rescued 18 victims.

Police identified some of the suspects as Collins Francis Olayi Ojo, Matthew Balogun, Jahil Belu, Abdul Rahman Ofizi, Talent Siniyi, Ray Morrison, Lawal Abdul Azizi, David Ogogona, Gift Prince, and Kingsley Honest.

Investigators said the suspects were arrested in an apartment believed to have served as the group’s operational base.

Preliminary investigations indicate that Collins Francis Olayi Ojo is the alleged coordinator and leader of the syndicate. He is accused of facilitating the movement of nine Nigerians into Ghana by road and allegedly directing them into cyber fraud and other criminal activities.

During the raid, police retrieved 28 laptops and nine mobile phones, all of which have been seized for forensic examination as investigations continue.

The Ghana Police Service says efforts are ongoing to dismantle the criminal network and bring all those involved to justice.

The Ghana Police Service has arrested two suspects in the Ashanti Region over their alleged involvement in the illegal trade of firearms and ammunition, following an intelligence-led operation by the CID Headquarters’ Anti-Armed Robbery Unit.

According to police, the operation was launched after intelligence gathered in January 2026 indicated that some individuals were supplying various types of weapons and ammunition to criminal elements in the Ashanti Region, contrary to Section 192(a) of the Criminal Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29).

The first suspect, Christopher Kubini, 63, a businessman and resident of Abuakwa-NanaKetewa, was arrested on July 15, 2026. During interrogation, he allegedly admitted the offence and identified Kwabena Tawiah, 56, a businessman and resident of Asokwa-Kokoben, as his main firearms supplier.

Police subsequently arrested Tawiah and conducted a search at his residence, leading to the recovery of a cache of weapons and ammunition. The items reportedly included a Malik pistol, Walther PK380 pistol, Smith & Wesson pistol, Stag SCR pistol, Taurus G2C pistol loaded with 5 rounds of 9mm, multiple pistol magazines, 100 rounds of 9mm live ammunition, and 20 rounds of .380 ammunition.

Investigators said the second suspect admitted he had been involved in the sale of firearms for about 10 years despite not holding a valid licence.

He also allegedly disclosed that he had sold guns to several people across the country without proper documentation.

Both suspects remain in police custody while investigations continue to identify and arrest other alleged accomplices and customers.

The Ghana Police Service has warned that the illegal possession and sale of firearms is a serious criminal offence and vowed to prosecute offenders to the fullest extent of the law.

The National Communications Director of the Hopeful New Patriotic Party (NPP), Joseph Osei-Oppong Brenya, has reaffirmed his support for Ashanti Regional Chairman Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, amid the latter’s ongoing legal challenges.

In a strongly worded Facebook post, Brenya reflected on his long-standing relationship with Chairman Wontumi, recalling that he publicly defended him in 2013 when, according to him, doing so was unpopular.

“In 2013, I stood by you when it was not fashionable to do so. I exposed the then John Dramani Mahama’s evil plans against you and your businesses. Here they are again but they will fail this one too,” he wrote.

Brenya asserted that despite occasional disagreements with Wontumi over internal NPP politics, his loyalty to the Ashanti Regional Chairman remains unwavering.

“We may differ a bit in NPP politics but loyalty goes beyond these. This is not the time to leave you behind. I am with you and we will not allow evil to triumph.”

He ended his message with a statement that has since attracted attention on social media.

“May God forgive them, because we won’t.”

The Facebook post comes amid ongoing public and political discussions surrounding Chairman Wontumi’s legal battle, with several NPP figures rallying behind the Ashanti Regional Chairman and criticizing what they describe as political persecution.
