U-20 AFCON Showdown: Black Satellites Gear Up for Fierce Battle Against Central African Republic
Ghana’s Black Satellites are bracing themselves for a high-stakes showdown against the Central African Republic (CAR) in their final Group C fixture at the U-20 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), with head coach Desmond Ofei calling it a “tough test.”
After a gritty 1-0 victory over defending champions Senegal—sealed by Emmanuel Mensah’s first-half strike—the Ghanaian squad has reignited their quest for qualification. That crucial win came on the heels of a 1-1 draw in their tournament opener against DR Congo, putting Ghana in a do-or-die position ahead of Thursday’s clash on May 8, 2025.
Coach Ofei, while acknowledging the challenge CAR poses, is backing his team’s spirit and preparation to carry them through.
“We know the game against CAR will be difficult,” he said. “But just like we did against Senegal, we’ll fight, prepare thoroughly, and give everything on the pitch.”
With a spot at the FIFA U-20 World Cup in Qatar on the line, the Black Satellites are more determined than ever to rise to the occasion and fly Ghana’s flag high on the global stage.

Meadeama Coach Ibrahim Tanko confident to beat FC Samatex in the FA Cup Showdown
Medeama SC head coach Ibrahim Tanko has expressed his confidence that his side will eliminate FC Samartex from the MTN FA Cup quarter finals on Sunday.
The Yellow and Mauves will host their Ghana Premier League rivals this weekend in a highly anticipated Round of 16 encounter at the TnA Stadium.
Coach Tanko acknowledged the quality and recent form of Samartex, admitting the contest will be a difficult one for his team.
The former Accra Lions gaffer remains confident Medeama can capitalise on home advantage and progress after 90 minutes.
“FC Samartex is a very strong side. In their last five games they have not lost and they play very well away from home. They went to Aduana and picked a point, so definitely they are a real threat,” Tanko told Medi TV.
“But like I said, we are playing at home, we want to control the game and create chances. Based on the training we are doing, I’m sure we are going to get the needed result.”
The MTN FA Cup Round of 16 clash between Medeama SC and FC Samartex is scheduled for Saturday, February 7, with kick-off set for 5:00 pm at the TnA Stadium.

Midfielder Caleb Yirenkyi rejects €18M move to England
Ghanaian midfielder Caleb Yirenkyi have rejected an €18M offer from unnamed English Premier League Club on transfer deadline date.
The decision is said to be driven by his desire to secure regular playing time and boost his chances of making Black Stars squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, according to Viaplay.
The 20-year-old FC Nordsjaelland standout had reportedly attracted an €18 million offer just before the transfer window closed.
Nordsjaelland Sporting Director Alexander Riget admitted the offer was significant but stressed the club’s belief in the player’s value.
“It’s clear that 18 million euros is a lot of money, but if you believe the player is worth more, it’s easy enough to say no. Riget told Viaplay media.
His choice reflects a focus on regular playing time rather than an immediate high-profile move.
The Premier League team involved has not been revealed, but the sizeable offer highlights Yirenkyi’s growing reputation in European football.
The Black Stars midfielder has made 39 appearances for Nordsjaelland this season, scoring three goals and setting up six assists, and is contracted to the club until 2030.
