2026 FIFA World Cup: Ghana group opponent England defeats New Zealand in a warm up Friendly
Ghana group opponent the Three Lions of England have defeated New Zealand in Florida in an International Friendly ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup
The Three Lions dominated early but struggled to convert, with John Stones somehow heading wide when completely unmarked after Rashford’s corner and Marcus Rashford’s shot brilliantly blocked by Surman. Despite 84.5% possession in the opening nine minutes, England had managed just one shot on target alongside New Zealand’s.
The breakthrough arrived in first-half stoppage time when Djed Spence, who earned his first England assist, whipped a lovely cross into the box for Harry Kane to rise and guide a deft header into the far corner at 45+2′. Kane’s goal made New Zealand the 35th different opponent he’s scored against for England.
England recorded 4 shots on target versus New Zealand’s 1. The second half saw eight England attempts without testing goalkeeper Crocombe. Debutant Rio Ngumoha, at 17 years 281 days, became England’s fifth-youngest debutant.
England will face Costa Rica on June 10 in their final warm-up before the World Cup begins against Croatia on June 17. They compete in Group L with Panama, Ghana, and Croatia.

GFA Boss Kurt Okraku Rejects National Team Players Selection Interference allegations
Ghana Football Association (GFA) President Kurt Edwin Simeon-Okraku has strongly rejected allegations that he or the football governing body interferes in the selection of players for Ghana’s national teams, particularly the senior men’s team, Black Stars.
In a recent appearance on The Delay Show, Okraku declared: “When it comes to the work of the coaches, nobody interferes in their job.” The comment was made in direct response to persistent accusations of external influence on team selections.
The remarks come as Ghana prepares for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, having qualified and been drawn into Group L alongside England, Croatia, and Panama. Okraku has expressed confidence in the team’s potential, describing it as a “good team” capable of competing for the title, while also stating his personal ambition to see Ghana win the tournament.
Okraku has consistently maintained that player selection remains the sole responsibility of the technical team and head coach. He emphasised that the GFA’s role is limited to providing administrative and logistical support, creating an enabling environment for coaches to operate independently without external influence on team matters.
The issue of alleged interference has been a recurring topic in Ghanaian football discourse, particularly surrounding high-profile player recalls and squad compositions. Despite the claims, Okraku has reiterated that coaches are fully accountable for their selections.
As the Black Stars gear up for their fifth World Cup appearance, Okraku’s latest denial on The Delay Show underscores the association’s position amid intense public scrutiny and high expectations.
The team aims to build on their strong qualifying performance while navigating a competitive group stage draw.
