NPP National Treasurer aspirant Collins Nuntwiri Nuamah has been involved in a road accident on the Kwahu Ridge, forcing a temporary suspension of his campaign activities.

The incident occurred at about 8:30 p.m. on Saturday, September 5, 2026, while Nuamah and members of his campaign team were returning from engagements in the Afram Plains North and South areas of the Eastern Region.

Campaign tour takes sudden turn

The campaign vehicle was reportedly heading towards Anyinam, where Nuamah was scheduled to continue his campaign activities on Sunday.

His itinerary included engagements in Atiwa East and Atiwa West, followed by campaign activities in the Kwahu bloc.

However, the accident forced the campaign team to put those plans on hold.

Nuamah receiving medical attention

Parliament has broken its silence over a controversial memorandum circulating on social media that allegedly details the return of GH¢70,000 connected to the work of the Appointments Committee.

In a statement issued by the Parliamentary Service, Parliament acknowledged the circulation of the document, which has reportedly been attributed to the Deputy Minority Leader and Member of Parliament for Asokwa, Hon. Patricia Appiagyei.

The development has generated significant public interest, particularly because the alleged payment is said to be connected to parliamentary committee proceedings.

However, Parliament has cautioned against drawing conclusions from the document, stressing that it has not independently verified its authenticity.

The Parliamentary Service noted that reports surrounding the alleged memo have been accompanied by categorical denials concerning both the authenticity of the document and the circumstances described in it.

Parliament raises alarm over alleged fake document

According to Parliament, any allegation involving payments allegedly connected to the work of a parliamentary committee—particularly the Appointments Committee—deserves serious scrutiny.

The institution also expressed concern over the possibility that the document could have been fabricated and falsely attributed to a sitting Member of Parliament.

Parliament warned that such conduct, if established, could undermine public confidence in Parliament and the integrity of its processes.

The Rt. Hon. Speaker has welcomed the investigation and urged the OSP to thoroughly and expeditiously establish the facts, including determining whether the memorandum is genuine and whether the claims contained in it are accurate.

Parliament wants whoever created a fake memo held accountable

Parliament has stated that it is prepared to cooperate with the OSP and any other competent investigative authority conducting a lawful investigation into the matter.

More significantly, the institution says that if investigators establish that the memorandum was fabricated or falsely attributed to the Deputy Minority Leader, the matter should not end there.

Parliament wants the appropriate investigative authorities, with support from the Cyber Security Authority and other relevant law enforcement agencies where necessary, to identify the individuals responsible for creating and circulating the alleged false document.

Parliament described the deliberate fabrication and circulation of documents purportedly originating from Members or offices of Parliament as a serious threat to the integrity and reputation of the institution.

It urged the public not to treat the contents of the circulating memorandum as established fact until its authenticity and the circumstances surrounding it have been properly determined.

New Patriotic Party (NPP) First Vice-Chairman aspirant George Kwabena Abankwah-Yeboah has called on the party to focus on rebuilding and reorganising its structures rather than rushing to attack the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC).

Speaking during an interview with Citi TV journalist Umaru Sanda, Abankwah-Yeboah was asked what was so wrong with the current NDC government that should make Ghanaians consider returning the NPP to power in 2028.

In response, the NPP contender appeared to shift the focus from immediate criticism of the government to the need for the party to put its own house in order.

According to him, the NPP must concentrate on reorganising itself and strengthening its structures while allowing Ghanaians enough time to assess the performance of the NDC administration.

His position suggests that the party’s path back to power should begin with internal renewal rather than simply relying on dissatisfaction with the government.

Abankwah-Yeboah’s comments come at a time when the NPP is looking ahead to the 2028 elections and confronting the task of rebuilding the party after its defeat at the polls.

Political scientist says Chief Justice’s remarks on SSNIT, MIIF could damage public confidence in judicial independence

The controversy surrounding Chief Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie’s comments on the performance of state-owned enterprises (SOEs) has taken another dramatic turn, with University of Ghana political scientist Dr Joshua Ebuntie Zaato warning that the remarks could undermine the independence and credibility of the Judiciary.

Dr Zaato, a Senior Lecturer at the University of Ghana’s Department of Political Science, argued that the Chief Justice must be particularly cautious about entering areas that could be interpreted as political commentary.

According to him, the Judiciary occupies a unique constitutional position and must remain sufficiently removed from political contestation to preserve public confidence.

“THIS IS AN ATTEMPT TO CANNIBALISE THE JUDICIARY”

Speaking on The Big Issue on Channel One TV, Dr Zaato launched a strong defence of the separation of powers, insisting that citizens depend on the Judiciary as a protection against abuse and tyranny.

He argued that the Chief Justice’s comments risk pulling the judicial arm of government into the political arena.

Dr Zaato described the situation as an attempt to “cannibalise” the Judiciary by drawing it closer to the Executive and political discourse.

His concern is that once the head of the Judiciary is perceived as taking positions on the performance of governments or state institutions, questions about judicial neutrality could inevitably arise.

WHY IS THE CHIEF JUSTICE TALKING ABOUT GOVERNMENT’S RECORD?

Dr Zaato questioned why the Chief Justice would comment on the performance of state institutions when government already has officials responsible for defending its record.

He pointed specifically to the government’s communication machinery, arguing that there was no need for the Chief Justice to become an apparent defender of the performance of state institutions.

For him, the issue goes beyond whether the Chief Justice’s observations were factually correct.

The bigger concern, he suggested, is how such comments are perceived by the public and whether they could weaken confidence in the Judiciary as an independent arm of government.

“WHY ONLY THE LAST EIGHT YEARS?”

Dr Zaato also took issue with the apparent focus on the performance of SOEs over the previous eight years.

He questioned why an assessment of institutions such as SSNIT should be limited to the period of the Akufo-Addo administration rather than examining the institution’s performance across a much longer period.

He argued that comparing an eight-year period with only two years of the current administration could create an impression of political selectivity.

“If you’re trying to use eight years and two years, it’s wrong,” he argued.

NPP ALREADY DEMANDS RETRACTION

The latest criticism comes after the New Patriotic Party (NPP) also attacked the Chief Justice’s comments, describing them as political and calling on him either to retract the remarks and apologise or resign.

The controversy followed the Chief Justice’s recent outreach engagements with state institutions, including SSNIT and the Minerals Income Investment Fund (MIIF).

During the engagements, Baffoe-Bonnie commented on the performance of the institutions and referred to improvements he said had been recorded.

JUDICIAL SERVICE FIRES BACK

But the Judicial Service has rejected suggestions that the Chief Justice intended to compromise judicial independence.

In a statement issued by Judicial Secretary Musah Ahmed, the Service said the observations were made in good faith and were not intended to serve any purpose inimical to judicial independence.

The statement further reaffirmed the Chief Justice’s commitment to protecting the integrity and independence of the Judiciary and promoting justice and equality before the law.

THE BIG QUESTION

The unfolding controversy has now placed Chief Justice Baffoe-Bonnie at the centre of an increasingly heated national debate over where judicial commentary should end and political commentary should begin.

While the Judicial Service insists the remarks were made in good faith, critics such as Dr Zaato believe the perception created by the comments could be damaging enough to warrant serious concern.

And with political actors already weighing in, the debate is unlikely to disappear anytime soon.

For Dr Zaato, the warning is blunt: the Judiciary must guard its independence fiercely — because once public confidence begins to erode, rebuilding it could be far more difficult.
