A tribute concert in honour of the legendary musician and founder of the Osibisa band, Teddy Osei, is set to take place tonight, April 4, at the SG Mall in Top High, Kumasi.

The free-admission event is scheduled to begin at 7:00 PM and is described as a homecoming concert celebrating Teddy Osei’s remarkable contributions to global music and honouring his enduring legacy.

This concert follows an ongoing state burial taking place at the forecourt of the State House today, April 4. According to the organizers, attendees can expect an evening filled with the iconic sounds of Osibisa, which blend African rhythms with rock and jazz influences to create unique “criss-cross rhythms that explode with happiness.”

The revered musician, saxophonist, and founding member of the iconic Afro-rock band Osibisa sadly passed away at the age of 88 on Tuesday, January 14, 2025. He started playing the saxophone while attempting to form a band with his college friends in the coastal city of Sekondi. After graduating from college, he worked as a building inspector for a year before creating a band called “The Comets.”

The Comets enjoyed brief popularity, but Osei travelled to London in 1962 after receiving a grant from the Ghanaian government to study at a private music and drama school for three years. He was later forced to leave due to a regime change in Ghana. In 1969, Osei founded Osibisa along with several other musicians.

The band gained popularity throughout the 1970s and is still celebrated for being a pivotal force in introducing African music to a global audience. Osibisa’s groundbreaking sound and energetic performances earned them international acclaim and a dedicated following. The tribute concert offers a rare opportunity for fans in his native Ashanti Region to witness performances by musicians in his honour as he is laid to rest on Saturday, April 5.
