President Mahama Urges World Leaders to Fight Poverty with Same Urgency as Pandemics

Published

on

President of Ghana, H.E. John Dramani Mahama, has called on global leaders to confront poverty and underdevelopment with the same urgency and collective action used to fight pandemics, warning that millions of young people in the Global South are being locked out of opportunity.

Speaking at a high-level meeting of the Accra Reset Initiative on the margins of the World Economic Forum in Davos, President Mahama said the world has previously shown that coordinated global action is possible when lives are at stake.

“If we could mobilize the world to fight a disease, why can’t we mobilize with the same urgency to fight poverty, dependency, and exclusion?” President Mahama asked.

A Global System Under Strain

The Ghanaian leader said the multilateral governance system established after the Second World War is weakening, with bilateral relations increasingly driven by transactional interests that leave developing countries vulnerable.

“Our world as we know it is at an inflection point. The global multilateral system is under strain, and many of the institutions that once saved millions of lives are now underfunded,” he said.

President Mahama noted that shrinking development assistance and rising geopolitical tensions make it imperative for countries of the Global South to build greater self-reliance.

Lessons from Global Health Crises

Drawing lessons from the global response to HIV/AIDS and COVID-19, President Mahama said decisive leadership and cooperation once transformed despair into progress.

“Twenty years ago, courageous leadership helped create the Global Fund and saved millions of lives. Today, we face a different pandemic—the pandemic of unfulfilled potential,” he stated.

He added that the COVID-19 crisis exposed deep inequities in global systems, particularly in vaccine access.

“Africa was the last continent to receive vaccines during a global pandemic. That experience was a powerful reminder that we must build our own capacity to act,” he said.

Youth, Jobs and Lost Potential

President Mahama warned that poverty, unemployment, and weak public systems pose an existential threat to social stability across Africa and the Global South.

“Millions of young people have no jobs, health systems collapse at the first crisis, and our economies extract resources without building anything lasting,” he said.

According to him, failure to address these challenges with urgency risks deepening inequality and instability.

Africa’s Reset Agenda

The President highlighted Ghana’s recent economic recovery as proof that reform and accountability can deliver results, while stressing that no single country can succeed alone.

“Ghana’s turnaround shows that execution beats excuses. But Ghana cannot succeed in isolation. Africa must move together,” he said.

He outlined the Accra Research Initiative as a practical framework for coordinated action, focusing on skills development, regional manufacturing, and collective bargaining on trade, minerals, and climate finance.

“This is not a talk shop. It is a practical blueprint for building real sovereignty—measured in jobs created, children educated, and young people thriving,” Mahama explained.

Call for Partnership, Not Charity

President Mahama concluded by urging world leaders to replace charity-driven engagement with genuine partnership.

“We did not come to ask for charity. We came to propose a global partnership of the willing, based on mutual respect and shared prosperity,” he said.

He challenged leaders to show courage comparable to that displayed during global health emergencies.

“The question before us is simple: do we have the courage to fight poverty with the same urgency with which we fight pandemics?” President Mahama asked.

A RECORD-BREAKING NIGHT

The achievement puts Rhys in an elite position in Emmy history. Following his earlier victory for The Americans in 2018, he has now won lead acting honours across drama, limited series and comedy categories.

His latest victories also brought his total number of Emmy wins to three, from eight career nominations.

EMOTIONAL ACCEPTANCE SPEECH

Rhys received a standing ovation during the ceremony and used his speeches to acknowledge the people who helped shape his career.

He thanked his family, his colleagues and, in particular, the people of Wales, describing his homeland as a powerful influence on his journey as an actor. 

‘WIDOW’S BAY’ ENJOYS A BIG NIGHT

Rhys’s success was part of a broader triumph for Widow’s Bay. The Apple TV+ series dominated the ceremony, collecting multiple awards, including Outstanding Comedy Series, while also earning acting, writing and directing honours.

The series entered the awards with 19 nominations and ultimately emerged as one of the biggest winners of the night.

A CAREER MILESTONE

For Rhys, the double victory represents another major chapter in a career that has included acclaimed performances in Brothers & Sisters, The Americans and Perry Mason.

At 51, the Welsh actor has now established himself as one of the rare performers to win Emmy recognition across three major lead-acting categories—an achievement that could stand for years as one of the ceremony’s defining moments.

A political storm has erupted in Israel after Culture Minister Miki Zohar threatened to pursue the revocation of citizenship of filmmakers Yuval Abraham and Rachel Szor, following the international success of their Gaza documentary NAZA.

The documentary won the Special Jury Prize at the 83rd Venice International Film Festival and received a reported 25-minute standing ovation at its premiere.

MINISTER ACCUSES FILMMAKERS OF TREASON

Zohar described the documentary as deeply damaging to Israel and accused its creators of acting against the country during wartime.

In a statement on X, he said he would seek to revoke the Israeli citizenship of Abraham and Szor, accusing them of treason and of seeking international approval at Israel’s expense. He has also asked officials to examine the possibility of revoking their citizenship and investigate how material used in the film was obtained.

The threat has intensified an already heated debate inside Israel over the limits of dissent, journalism and artistic expression during the Gaza war.

WHAT IS NAZA ABOUT?

The 80-minute documentary examines Israel’s military campaign in Gaza through interviews with 24 Israeli military and intelligence personnel, who spoke anonymously.

According to accounts of the film, the interviewees describe the use of artificial-intelligence and surveillance systems in the process of identifying targets in Gaza. The documentary also examines allegations that civilian casualties were anticipated during some military operations.

The Israeli military has rejected the film’s allegations, criticizing the reliance on anonymous testimonies and disputing claims that its operations deliberately target civilians.

NETANYAHU ALSO CONDEMNS THE FILM

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has separately attacked NAZA, describing it as inflammatory and accusing it of contributing to antisemitism.

Israeli military chief Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir has also criticized the documentary and called for possible legal action over what officials describe as misleading or damaging claims about the Israel Defense Forces.

FILMMAKERS DEFEND THEIR WORK

Abraham and Szor have defended the documentary and the journalistic process behind it. Their film was produced after several years of investigation and relies on testimony from people with direct experience of Israeli military and intelligence operations.

The Guardian, which co-produced the documentary, has also defended the filmmakers, saying the project was based on extensive investigative journalism and verified testimonies from confidential sources. The newspaper said it would defend the film and its creators against censorship or attacks.

WIDER DEBATE OVER FREEDOM OF EXPRESSION

The controversy has now moved beyond the film itself, raising questions about citizenship, political dissent and freedom of expression in Israel.

The legal process for stripping citizenship is complex and requires more than a ministerial declaration. Israeli courts have previously recognized circumstances in which citizenship can be revoked for serious acts of disloyalty, including certain forms of treason or espionage.

For the filmmakers, the dispute has placed NAZA at the centre of an international debate over how Israel’s conduct in Gaza is documented and discussed.

The film’s Venice award has given it a major international platform, while the reaction from Israeli officials has ensured that its political impact is likely to continue well beyond the film festival.

Raheem Sterling Admits Dangerous Driving After M3 Lamborghini Crash

Published

on

Former England international footballer Raheem Sterling has pleaded guilty to dangerous driving following a single-vehicle crash involving his Lamborghini on the M3 motorway in Hampshire.

Sterling, 31, appeared at Basingstoke Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday and admitted dangerous driving as well as charges relating to the possession of nitrous oxide and failing to provide a specimen.

Crash on M3

The incident happened on May 28, 2026, when Sterling’s Lamborghini Urus crashed on the southbound M3 near the Minley Interchange.

Police said no other vehicles were involved and no injuries were reported. Sterling was subsequently charged after the crash.

The dangerous-driving charge covered his driving on several roads, including the M25, M3, A327 and Minley Road, before the collision.

Nitrous Oxide Charges

Sterling also admitted possessing six nitrous oxide canisters. The substance is classified as a Class C drug in the UK when possessed for wrongful inhalation.

He additionally pleaded guilty to failing to provide a specimen.

The court heard allegations about his driving before the crash, with witnesses describing erratic manoeuvres and sudden changes in speed.

Football Career

Sterling has enjoyed a distinguished career with Liverpool, Manchester City and Chelsea, while also spending time on loan at Arsenal and later playing for Dutch club Feyenoord.

He made 82 appearances for England and won four Premier League titles with Manchester City. Sterling is currently without a club following the expiry of his Feyenoord contract.

The court proceedings are expected to determine the consequences of his guilty pleas.

AI Regulation Faces Political Deadlock as Calls Grow for Congress to Act

Published

on

WASHINGTON — Pressure is mounting on the U.S. Congress to establish stronger safeguards for artificial intelligence, but political divisions and uncertainty over how far regulation should go are making immediate action increasingly difficult.

The debate intensified this week after several prominent technology executives and AI researchers raised concerns about the potential risks of rapidly advancing systems. Their warnings have added momentum to calls for federal rules covering AI safety, cybersecurity, transparency and accountability.

Democrats Push for Urgent Action

Several Democratic lawmakers are urging Congress to move quickly, arguing that the pace of AI development is outstripping the government’s ability to oversee it.

Some lawmakers have proposed measures ranging from mandatory safety requirements to mechanisms that would allow humans to shut down advanced AI systems under certain circumstances. Senator Bernie Sanders has also backed legislation calling for a pause on the development of advanced AI and restrictions on superintelligence.

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries has called for decisive action, while other lawmakers have suggested creating a dedicated congressional committee to examine AI risks and develop legislation.

Republicans Warn Against Overregulation

Republican leaders have generally taken a more cautious approach, emphasizing the need to protect U.S. technological leadership, particularly in competition with China.

House Speaker Mike Johnson has rejected calls for an emergency congressional intervention, arguing that lawmakers need to understand the technology before imposing sweeping rules. He has said AI companies should take greater responsibility for developing safety measures while Congress works toward a more carefully designed framework.

President Donald Trump has also dismissed warnings about catastrophic AI risks, describing concerns about AI destroying humanity as a “hoax” and arguing that extensive regulation could undermine American competitiveness.

Tech Industry Also Calls for Rules

The political debate has become more complicated because some major AI companies are themselves calling for stronger government oversight.

OpenAI recently urged the U.S. government to establish mandatory national safety standards for advanced AI systems, including independent assessments, cybersecurity measures and reporting requirements for serious incidents. The company argued that voluntary commitments alone may not be sufficient.

Other technology leaders have similarly warned that increasingly capable AI systems could pose significant security and safety risks, although there is disagreement within the industry over how those risks should be addressed.

States Move Ahead

With Congress struggling to reach agreement, individual states have continued developing their own AI regulations, creating a growing patchwork of rules across the country. The dispute over whether federal legislation should override state AI laws has become one of the central issues in the debate.

The lack of a comprehensive federal framework could leave companies facing different requirements depending on where they operate, while supporters of federal regulation argue that a national approach would provide greater consistency.

Uncertain Path Ahead

For now, major legislation appears unlikely to move quickly. The House is approaching a lengthy recess, while lawmakers remain divided over whether AI presents an immediate emergency or requires a slower, more deliberate regulatory process.

The growing pressure from lawmakers, technology executives and the public means AI regulation is unlikely to disappear from Washington’s agenda. The central political challenge, however, remains finding a balance between preventing serious risks and ensuring that regulation does not weaken U.S. innovation or its position in the global AI race.

Save The Republic Demands Heads Roll Over Rising Drug Trafficking

Published

on

The Save the Republic pressure group, led by Kwesi Botchwey Esq, has raised alarm over what it describes as a disturbing rise in drug trafficking involving Ghana, demanding accountability from key state officials.

In a press conference held at the Ghana International Press Centre, the group insisted that recent cocaine seizures and arrests linked to Ghana risk damaging the country’s international reputation and turning it into a hub for illicit drug trafficking.

According to the group, several incidents since 2025 require urgent investigation. It cited an alleged March 2025 incident involving an aircraft reportedly arriving from Gran Canaria which was suspected to contain some amount of cocaine, the arrest of a man allegedly possessing 120 slabs of cocaine amounting to $150million around Cape Coast, and the reported seizure of 3.3 tonnes of cocaine at Pedu.

They also referenced reports of Ghanaian-linked drug arrests abroad, including an alleged June 18, 2026 arrest in Australia involving illicit drugs said to be worth about $208 million, as well as a cocaine seizure in France reportedly valued at $269 million.

The group claims cocaine seizures connected to Ghana since 2025 are collectively valued at about $976 million.
Against this backdrop, Save the Republic is demanding the resignation or removal of officials it believes should be held accountable, including the Interior Minister and heads of Customs, the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority, the Narcotics Control Commission and other agencies responsible for securing the country’s entry and exit points.

The group further urged President John Dramani Mahama to treat the situation as a national security threat, warning that unchecked drug trafficking could fuel money laundering, terrorism financing and other forms of organised crime.
