The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has announced that it is preparing to communicate its official position on proposed amendments to Ghana’s 1992 Constitution.

In a statement dated August 28, 2026, and signed by Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, Chairman of the NPP Policy Co-ordination Committee, the party said it had completed an internal review of the proposed constitutional reforms.

The NPP said it had been formally consulted as part of the national constitutional review process and had made submissions to the Constitution Review Committee (CRC), which subsequently presented its report to the government.

According to the party, the government later issued a Position Paper dated July 30, 2026, outlining its responses to the recommendations contained in the CRC report.

The NPP’s Constitutional and Legal Affairs Policy Committee subsequently undertook a detailed review of both documents.

The committee has now prepared the NPP’s own position paper following its analysis of the CRC report and the Government’s Position Paper.

The party said the completed position paper will first be submitted to its Presidential Candidate, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, and the National Executive Committee (NEC) for consideration and adoption.

The NPP will then communicate its official position on the proposed constitutional amendments to the Ghanaian public.

The party has therefore not yet publicly indicated which specific proposals it supports, rejects or wants modified.

The NPP said its internal review is consistent with its commitment to inclusive and consultative decision-making.

It also reaffirmed its commitment to a transparent, inclusive and orderly constitutional review process that protects Ghana’s democracy, strengthens constitutional institutions and advances political stability.

The party said it believes the constitutional review process must ultimately contribute to the protection of Ghana’s democratic gains and the strengthening of the country’s constitutional framework.

The development comes as the proposed amendments to the 1992 Constitution continue to generate national discussion, with the NPP’s eventual position expected to contribute significantly to the broader debate.

The NPP’s latest position also follows its earlier invitation to members and identifiable groups to submit proposals for amendments to its own party constitution, reflecting the party’s ongoing focus on institutional and constitutional reforms.

Ghana Water Ltd (GWL) has announced a temporary interruption in water supply to several communities in Western Accra following damage to a major transmission pipeline during drainage construction works.

According to GWL, a 500mm-diameter water transmission pipeline was damaged by AWERCO Construction Ltd during excavation works for an underground storm drain between Kaneshie First Light and Hansonic Junction.

The incident, which occurred during the drainage construction, caused the pipeline to burst and resulted in the entire excavation trench being flooded, disrupting water supply to several communities in the area.

In a press release issued on Friday, August 28, 2026, GWL said its engineers and technical teams were working around the clock to repair the damaged pipeline and restore normal water supply.

The company explained that its technical team was currently dewatering the flooded trench to gain access to the affected section of the pipeline.

GWL added that preparatory work had also commenced at one end of the damaged pipeline as the dewatering exercise continued. This, the company said, would enable its engineers to access the affected section and undertake the necessary repairs.

GWL apologised to customers in the affected areas for the inconvenience caused by the disruption and assured them that every effort was being made to restore normal water supply as soon as possible.

“Management regrets the inconvenience this has caused and assures customers that every effort is being made to restore normal water supply as soon as possible,” the company said.

GWL further stated that it would provide updates on the progress of the repair works and the restoration of water supply through its official communication channels.

A grieving husband, Daniel Ofori Asante, has accused the Greater Accra Regional Hospital, popularly known as Ridge Hospital, of negligence and unprofessional conduct following the death of his wife, Theresa Boakye Dua, after a scheduled Caesarean section.

Mr Asante made the allegations in a lengthy Facebook post on Friday, August 28, 2026, as he prepared to lay his wife to rest.

According to him, Theresa died after what he described as a horrific ordeal at Ridge Hospital on July 16, 2026, leaving him widowed after only 19 months of marriage.

He said the Caesarean section was Theresa’s first attempt at childbirth and that she had entrusted the hospital with her care for what was supposed to be a scheduled, elective procedure.

“In a few hours, I will lay to rest my beloved wife, Theresa Boakye Dua, after just 19 months of marriage,” Mr Asante wrote.

He alleged that his wife’s death was the result of failures within the healthcare system and accused medical personnel at Ridge Hospital of failing to protect her when she needed them most.

“Her only fault was being pregnant and placing her trust in Greater Accra Regional Hospital (Ridge Hospital) for a scheduled, elective Caesarean section,” he stated.

Mr Asante said he had been living with severe emotional pain since the evening of July 16, 2026, describing the events surrounding his wife’s treatment as a “nightmare” that had devastated him, their families and everyone close to them.

He said the tragedy had robbed their newborn son of the opportunity to grow up with his mother.

“Our baby boy has been robbed of the unconditional love of a devoted mother,” he said, adding that it was painful to think that his son would grow up without “the warmth of the woman who cherished him most.”

The bereaved husband also spoke about the impact of Theresa’s death on her parents.

He said he often looked at his mother-in-law and wondered how a mother could survive the pain of losing her only child while she was in the process of bringing new life into the world.

He further recounted the emotional experience of picking his father-in-law up from the airport after he was forced to return to Ghana earlier than planned.

According to Mr Asante, he and Theresa had said goodbye to her father at the airport in January, with plans for him to return to Ghana in 2027. However, he said her death forced the family to bring him back to Ghana weeks ago.

“Picking my father-in-law up from the airport over the last two weeks was one of the most heartbreaking moments of my life,” he wrote.

Mr Asante said the loss has affected the entire family, colleagues from the Ministry of Health, members of ICGC Covenant Temple, and numerous friends who knew Theresa.

He described his late wife as a “gentle, peaceful, and unproblematic soul” and alleged that what he considered reckless decisions at Ridge Hospital contributed to her death.

“Theresa was a gentle, peaceful, and unproblematic soul, yet reckless decisions made by some people at Ridge Hospital ensured her life was cut short,” he alleged.

The grieving husband also accused those involved of subjecting his family to severe emotional trauma and said the psychological scars left by the incident could not be easily repaired.

“Congratulations on making me a widower in my youth because you gambled with the life of the person I loved most,” he stated.

Mr Asante stressed that his intention was not merely to mourn his wife but also to pursue answers about what happened to her.

He said that after the funeral and burial on Friday, August 28, he would disclose what he described as the “full truth” surrounding the incident.

He characterised his experience as one involving “Unprofessionalism, Manipulation, and Extortion”, although he did not provide further details of those specific allegations in the post.

According to him, while exposing what happened would not bring Theresa back, he hoped it would help prevent other pregnant women and families from experiencing a similar ordeal.

“Will this bring back the life of my wife? Absolutely not, but so that no other pregnant woman or family has to endure this living nightmare,” he wrote.

Mr Asante ended his message by addressing his late wife directly, saying he would honour the promise he made to her by laying her to rest, but that his pursuit of answers would continue.

“T! I will lay you to rest today with an intensely heavy heart as I promised you, but know that our fight for truth does not end here,” he wrote, adding: “To be continued.”

He described Theresa as his best friend, soulmate and the love of his life, and said she did not deserve what happened to her.

“Rest in perfect peace, my best friend, my soulmate, and the love of my life. You did not deserve this,” he wrote.

He added that although the family had been left devastated, they would remain strong for their son, whom he identified as DT.

Equity Net Ghana has launched a project aimed at countering hate speech and discrimination against women, children, gender groups and sexual minority groups within the African setting, particularly Ghana.

The initiative, which has previously engaged religious leaders, student journalists and media practitioners, seeks to promote a more informed public discourse grounded in human rights and the laws of Ghana.

As part of the project, participants are being engaged on the Human Rights and Family Values Bill, 2025, with discussions focusing on its provisions and potential implications for citizens.

According to the facilitator of the program, Madam Modupe A. Nukunu, the 2025 Bill contains 19 clauses, with some amendments compared to the previous version exempting legal experts, academics, media practitioners and journalists from extreme consequences for interacting with the bill.

The facilitator stressed the importance of journalists and media professionals understanding the content of the Bill so they can properly explain its provisions to the public.
She noted that media practitioners have a responsibility to educate citizens on the real implications of the legislation, particularly if it is eventually assented to by the President.

The engagement further emphasized that increased public education and accurate reporting could help citizens better understand the Bill while reducing the risk of abuse, victimisation and stigmatization.

Equity Net Ghana is therefore urging media practitioners to take a responsible approach to reporting on the legislation and related human rights issues devoid of sensationalism to the public.

The IMANI Center for Policy and Education, in collaboration with the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA), has organized a four-day African Liberty Academy for students and young professionals.Held at the UPSA auditorium, the academy was themed “Africa Ascent: Forging Resilient Economies and Inclusive Governance.”

The program brought together students and young professionals to explore issues surrounding economic freedom, resilient economies and inclusive governance across Africa. Speaking to the media, President and CEO of IMANI Africa, Franklin Cudjoe, said Africa must move beyond rhetoric and take concrete steps to build resilient economies.

He observed that while phrases such as “Africa Rising” and “Africa is on the cusp of recovery” are frequently used to describe the continent’s economic prospects, many African countries continue to struggle to achieve sustainable economic transformation. According to him, African economies remain largely dependent on the production and export of primary commodities, making them vulnerable to external shocks.

Mr. Cudjoe stressed the need for African countries to identify and implement the key policies required to build stronger and more resilient economies. At the end of the section, one of the participants, Kelvin Nyarko, expressed appreciation to IMANI for organizing the academy, saying the program had broadened his understanding of economic freedom and governance.

He said the knowledge and perspectives gained from the workshop would help him better understand the challenges facing African economies and the importance of inclusive governance.
